This would take away the whole idea of a four man scramble. A couple of months ago, I actually played in a 4 man scramble where we played the entire round with another team. We traded score cards, and both teams knew how many mulligans the other team had. We also finished the round in 4.5 hrs. That's the format I would like in every 4-man scramble tournament. |

It all comes down to putting. You can hit crappy drives and bad approaches, but if you make the putts you will score well. Obviously it is easier to make putts when you have a good drive and can stick a wedge to 5 feet, but even if you can't do that, all you have to do is make the putts. I have played in many, many scrambles and the teams that do well never come in saying how well they drove the ball. They all come in saying "we made everything".
I played in one over the weekend and we didn't drive the ball particulary well, but we made all but 3 putts we could have made. Coincidentally, we shot 14 under, it could have been 16 or 17. It helped that we had 8 holes that we didn't even have to putt, but we still had to make the other 5. That was the difference in 14 under and 10 under. |

So it's finally summer and I'm starting to play in a few scrambles for various favorite charities in the region. Part of me says go enjoy the weather, sunshine, and have a good day AND it's all for charity. The competitive side of me says how the hell do 4 guys who's handicap range from 10-23 put up a score that is respectable, and do I dare say place. Hoping the collective knowledge of THP can help. So give me your key points for placing at a scramble. Assuming we play from the blue tee's it plays at 6289 yds with a rating/slope of 71.2/134. |

I tell ya, if it weren't for a good cause, I would never attend another charity scramble. I play quite a few of these and now I just go in with a have fun, enjoy the weather, and a 'try some interesting shots' attitude. I have to leave my competitive spirit at home. The ones around here seem to take 6 hours to play a round and like has been said, there is a lot of score 'padding' going on. Plus, seems like there is also a fair amount of alcohol involved so things seem to go downhill in a hurry after the turn....

Scrambles can be alot of fun! I always/only play with guys I know and we like to have a good time, plus we drink plenty of beer to keep the swing loose.
I am usually the safety guy, I always go last. If we have a ball in the fairway or on the green I can adjust my shot accordingly. BUT the key to playing well in a a scramble isn't about just good tee shots or approaches its all about PUTTING! What we try to do is make sure you all putt from the same spot! That way its easier to get a good read on the putt. And I'm not talking about the same general area, the exact same spot! We usually put a small hole in the green with a tee and place the ball directly in front of it. So after the first guy gives the read the other three know what the putt should do. Good Luck! |
