Default What Rules do you Play by?
Everyone has their own little "Local rule", one thing they do that isnt in the official guide, so I am asking, what are yours?

Here is a breakdown of how I play.

-Always take penalty for a drop.

-No Mulligans

-Gimmes are measured with by putting your putter head in the hole, and seeing if the ball is at rest inside of the exposed shaft. This is done with the longest standard length putter in the group.

-If a shot would damage your club, even if the previous shot was not bad (aka, rock near ball) a free drop is permitted if the obstacle is fixed. This does ont apply to trees.

-Ready Golf

That putter rule would be handy if a guy had one of those really long putters. With a really short grip. That would drop a few shots off my game.

LOL. We talked about that one day, and decided that it only applied to standard putters.
AKA >36 inches.

I'm not a fan of gimme's. If it is for a bird or par I don't give them because I've never been given one. Bogey or better, I don't care pick it up. I keep my own card and handicap so I take the penalties and then some compared to the guys I play with.

Breakfast or Lunch ball, depending on the time of the day. For those that don't know, that's two off the first tee.

Occasionally we'll treat OB as a lateral hazard (no stroke or distance penalty). Just certain holes on certain courses.

We use gimmes, but not for birdie or eagle, you have to putt those out.

For the most part, straight up to the ROG.

The course I play often has nowhere to warm up, so we will occasionally hit a breakfast ball, but not all the time.

I will not hit a ball sitting in grass that has pea gravel from the cart path on it. I'll move it somewhere that won't ruin my clubs. If I hit a crappy shot into the woods I'll play it as it lies or take an unplayable.

I play ready golf too, but a birdie gets you honors on the tee.

My buddies and I play the standard ROG with 2 exceptions: Breakfast ball off the first tee (most places we play don't have a driving range to warm up on); 1 free mulligan from tee or fairway, per round of 18. We never play for money, just for fun and bragging rights.

My Dad, however, plays strictly by the ROG. Don't even think about saying the M word around him....(mulligan)!!

When not playing in Skins game... however we want to. I don't mean 10 yard foot wedges but using common sense. Standard 2 off #1 if you like, not hitting near any rocks/roots, ball rolls in a divot/bare spot it gets moved... things like that. I'm not counting my score for handicap or boasting what I shoot so if I hit a bad one or one I don't like I throw one down and hit another. Nor am I one to hit 7 in a row until I hit one I like but its a quick reload and if it's not good then I go on. I'm there to have fun... not sit there and wonder what rule and section this ruling would be. I don't play with others that are all anal and stuck on rules either during a casual round. If you pull out a rules book when we are playing a casual and fun round that will be the last time I play with you.

I think the game is more fun and satisfying if you follow the rules. Someone almost always asks me, "How'd you play?"

I wouldn't know how to answer if I didn't follow the rules.

I rarely keep score and measure my success by how much fun I had. I only remember the good shots anyways. Lol

Yes, it certainly is a dead horse you are beating. We know you love to follow the rules, but there is no need to insult those of us who don't share in your fervor.

I play by the rules of having fun. I am not a professional golfer and I never will be. If I was someone who played in tournaments or with strangers I would always follow the rules. But for me it's about getting outside and enjoying a round with friends. I generally play by the rules but if a killer turtle is coming after someone I would give them a free shot. It's more about the laughs and company than the rules for me.

In my regular Saturday morning skins group, we allow the "rolling" of the ball which means it can be moved a inch or two at the most but that is about it. No scores are posted from these rounds. If it is really wet we may declare lift, clean and cheat at the start.
All other times, I'm by the rules 100% of the time. No mulligans, no gimmes, no nothin.
