If wishes were fishes, yada yada...anyway, I wish I had started in my youth, like Mr. Claycribbs. My son started at age 12 and he's now 17 and a senior in high school. He played varsity golf all four years in high school and man does he have a golf swing. He even has a one-iron in the bag.
![]() It's still very much a learning process for me. I'd enjoy playing with Ole Gray, but he's probably forgotten more about the game then I'll very know. :-) |

When I met my grandfather for the first time (2003?) he took my new(to me) cousin, my father, and I out. Big Boulder Golf Course in Indiana. I remember I had a big putt, and the greens were still covered with dew, so i drew a line with my finger from my ball all the way to the hole. I hit the putt, never went on that intended line, and went in. Since then I was hooked

Started in 1975, played on a very limited basis and then stopped for lack of time, picked it up again in 1980 playing very very seldom and stopped again in 1994 out of frustration with the lack of time that I could devote to the game as I could never even look at the sticks more than two or three times a season. Took it up again end of last year and spring of this year playing a practicing enough finally to get over the hump, away from frustration and into actual enjoyment of the game. That is not to say that I am a terrific player. However I am improving steadily and have built enough of a foundation that I have something to build upon for the rest of my days.

About two years ago. (I'll be 40 in April)
My father and I always spent a lot of time together, water skiing in the summer, and snow skiing in the winter. When we got older, he couldn't really snow ski much, and I developed an allergic reaction to the water where my parents lived and kept the boat... So we didn't spend as much time together as we used to. I knew sooner or later I was going to fall in love with golf. In skiing (both types) I always focused on body mechanics, and felt since the golf swing is (what I call) a "complex body movement," it was right up my alley. Golf became my father's obsession, and my sister married a golf nut, but I purposely avoided getting involved. I know myself. I am an equipment *****, and I don't usually like the inexpensive stuff! I knew golf was going to be dangerous for my bank account. What happened was- A really good friend's father died, and I saw how much he missed his Dad. It got me thinking that I wanted to spend more time with my father. Golf was the perfect opportunity! |

My dad gave me my first set of clubs for my 7th birthday. I believe I got my first real set when I was 11-12. I really started to play a lot when I was 13. My local course had a membership for Junior golfers up till you graduated HS for only 200 bucks a year. My best friend lived across from the course so I used to keep my clubs at his house, ride my bike over there in the mornings. We would go play 9 holes in the morning, back to his house, eat lunch, swim and then head back to the course for another 9 later in the day. Those were the days!

In 1999 I didn't know what to get my dad for Fathers Day and I assumed that all dads golf. A friend and I invited our fathers out (we were both 18) as a gift....much to our surprise neither of them played golf. Sadly, my friend passed away a few months later but his dad stuck to golf from that day on and so did I. We play a few times a year and he is part of our annual golf trip 11 years later.
My dad, he makes the golf trip but hates golf. |

I started in 1971, it was also the year I got my very own 12 gauge shot gun, lol. My parents told my step brother and I that they would buy us lessons if we were interested in playing and I was like why not? I played pretty solid until getting married in 1977 and then picked it back up in 1987 or 88. Work took over for a number of years from 2001 until last year when I re-ignited the love.
