Default Psi-Ops The Movie / J.J. Abrams to Direct M:I 3

Producers Adrian Askarieh and Chuck Gordon have optioned video game Psi-Ops from publisher Midway, reports Variety. They are in talks with a director and plan to take the property and director as a package to studios after Labor Day.

Described as an X-Men meets The Bourne Identity adventure-like movie, it's the story of a government agent with psionic powers whose memory is erased. He slowly recalls his abilities as he is sent to infiltrate a group of rogue agents who were also part of his training program. The game was released in June.

"I've always been interested in the whole idea of psionic powers that have been developed by the government, even though they've been very close-mouthed about admitting they conducted those kind of experiments," Askarieh said.

Midway also owns Spy-Hunter, which Askarieh and Gordon are producing at Universal Pictures. John Woo is directing the film with The Rock playing the title character.

Paramount Pictures and Cruise/Wagner Productions made it official today that J.J. Abrams will direct Mission: Impossible 3, starring Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kenneth Branagh, and Scarlett Johansson.

Abrams, the screenwriter of Armageddon, is also the creator of Alias and Felicity as well as a writer on the new television series Lost. Having directed all three of those series, Abrams makes his major motion picture directorial debut with the third installment of "Mission: Impossible."

Previously being prepped in Berlin, the film is now set to begin shooting in the summer of 2005.

Cruise will first team up with director Steven Spielberg on The War of the Worlds, which starts filming this November. The 2005 release is a Paramount and DreamWorks production.

Based on H.G. Wells' legendary science fiction classic, "The War of the Worlds" (published in 1898), the film is a modern day version of what many critics agree is the definitive model for alien invasion stories.

I'm looking forward to both movies. Mainly Psi-Ops because I was such a huge fan of the game. As far as M:I 3 goes, it's not going to be the same without Woo or Palma directing it. But, you never know.

Hm, I wasn't a fan of the Psi-ops game and I thought the story was the worst part of it. If they go by the game's storyline it will be bad. They need to change some things or we will have a brainless action movie.... which might not be a bad thing with the whole psi stuff.
