![]() Street fundraisers for charity have developed a bad reputation over the last decade for their aggressive tactics, and have become popularly known as "Chuggers" (Charity Muggers). So looks like the muslim charities felt left out because they were not getting a share of the bad publicity, decided to join the fray. 1) We have people with their buckets standing on every corner on an almost daily basis.Almost hard to find a street corner with no Bucket person on it. 2) Guys with 'Charity' buckets stopping traffic and targetting motorists in their cars 3) And if manage to avoid being harassed by them on the street, this year they have come up with a new tactic of going door to door with their buckets, and harassing people on their doorstep.this all is creating a very bad impression especially among non-muslims who find some muslim guy standing on their doorstep every other day. Okay some of this bucket mafia are small tinpot charities, but what surprises me is that an established international charity like Islamic Relief is one of the biggest culprits. Note years ago to get a voluntary non paying position at the Islamic Relief warehouse was almost impossible individuals were carefully vetted. But now it seems they welcome anyone who is capable of holding the bucket to participate. And whats more noticed over the last few years 'some' young sisters using the whole bucket fund raising thing as an opportunity to put on the makeup and go out and flirt. Dont get me wrong I am all for giving especially in Ramazan but the behaviour of these chuggers leaves alot to be desired and very bad for Dawah. |

I have heard some of them are bogus collectors out to make some money for themselves....all of this is a consequence of lack of Muslim leadership. If we had proper Zakaat collectors and authorised leadership, we would have a baitul mal...which would serve people. And people would be free to make voluntary sadaqa. It does look bad I agree.
