http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/salam.gif Brother,

How many groups/bodies of Ulamah are in SA?

Whats are their differences? Is it simply because they are in different parts of the country?

http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/salam.gif Brother,

How many groups/bodies of Ulamah are in SA?
Below are some of the major 'ulama/theological bodies in South Africa:

The United Ulama Council of South Africa is made up of the following founding 'ulama bodies:

1. Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa (ex-Jamiatul Ulama Transvaal)
2. Jamiatul Ulama KwaZulu Natal
3. Muslim Judicial Council
4. Sunni Jamiatul Ulama (Barelwi)
5. Sunni Ulama Council (Barelwi)
6. Council of Ulama Eastern Cape
7. Eastern Cape Islam Congress

Further we have the following 'ulama bodies:

8. Majlisul Ulama of South Africa
9. Jamiatul Ulama Gauteng
10. Islamic Council of South Africa
11. Majlisush Shura Al Islami
12. Jamiatul Muftiyeen

In addition to these we have numerous other 'ulama and organisations that are not affiliated with any of the above. We also have various Darul Ulooms that have their own independent Darul Iftaas on which senior 'ulama are at the helm of. These, in most instances, are independent of any of the above bodies.

The differences amongst the 'ulama are far and many. Some are historical, and others geographical. Will maybe in a future post elaborate on some specifics.

Mawlana, this was previously on SF. Do not want to get into it here. Will discuss in private.

I don't think it's correct for us non-ulama to refer to an 'aalim as 'reverend' even if other ulama do so.

You can't dictate what laymen can or can't do if this name is referred continously and mentioned by Ulama-e-Kiraam as his deviancy must be extra-ordinary to have the spelling and the title changed but since its in your power to lecture others please go ahead.
I was not lecturing you or anyone; I was simply posting what I thought.

In any case, only one alim calls him Reverend Bham, that is Moulana A.S. Desai, and all the other Ulama accept Moulana Ebrahim Bhan to be a Allah fearing Ameer of Jamiatul Ulama.

This is a blanket statement.

I haven't heard of any other Ulama call him 'Reverend' Bham. Yes I've heard laymen say it many times.

My husband mentions that Mufti Ebrahim Desai talked good of Ml Bham.

I personally have nothing to do with Ml Bham. I respect him just as I respect Ml AS Desai. I don't pry in their differences as that's not my position.

I do not however appreciate my post being taken as a 'lecture' when it was simply a 'thought' which I have even mentioned to my own friends.

Respected Sister

The fact that you have not heard any other Ulama calling him Reverend Bham does not mean the following,

".....and all the other Ulama accept Moulana Ebrahim Bhan to be a Allah fearing Ameer of Jamiatul Ulama." It simply means that you have not heard and in no way denotes that all other ulama accept Maulana Ebrahim Bham to be a Allah Fearing Ameer......

I do not regard your post as being a lecture. In fact Maulana A S Desai is quite explicit in stating that his language is not to be used by everyone and that non-Ulama should not resort to his level of criticism. Other members of this very forum have e-mailed him regarding this query and he has answered accordingly.

As far as discussions on SF go, there may never be any disrespect for ANY 'Ulama - whatsoever. In fact, we wish to exercise a zero-tolerance policy on speaking about 'Ulama and their work without what is commonly understood to be good Adab.

By all means, discuss academically and state your preferences or what you have learnt.

However, calling an 'Alim a Reverend shall certainly lead to much Fitnah. We must not tolerate when it comes from (1) a lay person, (2) a foreigner and (3) a person that has never met and interacted with these 'Ulama.

Our Salaf would tremble before writing a single letter against a scholar of this Deen. They were people of Ikhlaas - they did justice to their work.

Who are we to go around and discuss 'Ulama as if they are pop-stars part of some celebrity culture, slinging jokes, low-opinions and snide remarks constantly - just stop and think that is our Deen, and it's not a casual pastime.

Please THINK before you take some action. Consider the effect of your actions. Consider the value of 'Ulama in this Deen.
