Assalaamu Alaikum. There seems to be some confusion about Hadhrat's family. May Allah reward Moulana Junaid Sb. (Abu_Uzair) for letting me know about this thread. I am a close relative of Hadhrat. I'm Hadhrat's sister's grandson. So, alhamdulillah, I do know about the dynamics of the family and will inshallah try my best to explain for everyone's benefit.
Hadhrat has one biological brother, 2 half-brothers, 4 half-sisters, 5 step-brothers, and 6 step-sisters. Hadhrat's father, Suleman Motala, married his first wife and had a son named Mohamed Ali from this marriage. However, his wife passed away soon after. Hadhrat's father then married Hadhrat's mother. From this marriage, his brother (Hadhrat Mawlana Abdur Rahim Motala) and he were born. Thus, Hadhrat has one biological brother & a half-brother as well. Only these two brothers share his surname (Motala). The rest have the last name Bhorat. This will be explained below. Hadhrat's maternal aunt (khala) was married in South Africa to Cassim Hassan Bhorat. Together, they had eleven children: 6 sons & 5 daughters. However, Hadhrat's aunt passed away during childbirth of the eleventh child. Consequently, since Hadhrat's mother was divorced at the time, she went to South Africa to marry her brother-in-law and take care of the small children left behind after the death of her sister. She did this on her father's instruction and, in her absence, he raised her two sons in India (Hadhrat & his brother) This marriage of Hadhrat's mother to her brother-in-law made Hadhrat's aunt's children all his step-siblings. Thus, his aunt's 6 sons and 5 daughters became his 6 step-brothers & 5 step-sisters. From the marriage of Hadhrat's mother to her brother-in-law, 5 more children were born: 4 daughters & 1 son. Thus, these were Hadhrat's 4 half-sisters & one half-brother since they shared a common mother with Hadhrat. In this way, Hadhrat has a total of 18 siblings. 6 have passed away now, so 13 are left. The sister that passed away this past weekend is Hadhrat's step-sister. She was the daughter of Hadhrat's aunt and became Hadhrat's step-sister through the marriage of Hadhrat's mother to her father. My grandmother is Hadhrat's step-sister as well in the same way. I generally refrain from using terms like 'step' & 'half' because Hadhrat as well as all of his brothers dislikes this. They all treat one another equally and there is no deficiency in the amount of love they have amongst each other. Inshallah, this clears up all confusion. It may be hard to understand, but just read it over inshallah & I would be happy to answer any questions. Also, sister "clover" mentioned one of Hadhrat's sisters writing on AskImam. To the best of my knowledge, none of Hadhrat's sisters wrote on AskImam. Also, none of his sisters share his last name, so I don't believe it is any of his sisters on there. And Allah knows best |

brother safwaan could you tell us more about the father of maulana motala db. I heard he became majzoob. Can you write a detailed account. Also any other beneficial information linked to the family. I read in jamal e muhammadi that hazrat motala db had a cousin who went to see maulana faqir muhammad rh who remarked on his spirtuality without even knowing him....You have any idea of the mamolaat of the various shaykhs, daily routine etc. Usually family members are more aware of such details.

brother safwaan could you tell us more about the father of maulana motala db. Hadhrat's father was first married into a family in Hathuran and his wife bore a son, Mohamed Ali. However, this wife passed away after a few years, after which Hadhrat's father married Hadhrat's mother. This marriage bore two children: Hadhrat and his elder brother, Hadhrat Mawlana Abdur Rahim Motala. Hadhrat's mother was a very pious woman, especially due to the influence of her father, who was highly respected in religious circles. Hadhrat's mother's piety had a profound effect on Hadhrat's father, and he took bay'ah at the hands of Mawlana Abdul Gafoor Bangali. After taking bay'ah, Hadhrat's father commenced dhikr and slowly, he began to become more reclusive and of a more majzoobi nature. Eventually, he told Hadhrat's mother that he intended to forsake the world and that she should go back to her father's house. Though many of the elders of the family tried to dissuade him from doing this, he did not listen. For this reason, they made him divorce Hadhrat's mother. At the time, Hadhrat's mother was pregnant with Hadhrat, so the iddah was until Hadhrat was born. Hadhrat's father remained in the same room in his house for 16 years, engaged in ibadah. He did not come out for anything, not food nor for the call of nature. Every now and then, family would visit and bring him food. If nothing came, it did not matter. He was a very pious individual. Eventually, to the best of my knowledge, he passed away in this state in the room. Hadhrat was with him at the time. This is as much as I know about Hadhrat's father. Brother, you also requested any other beneficial information linked to the family. Inshallah, if you specify, I can write something. However, this should be beneficial inshallah. Other than Hadhrat and his elder brother, Hadhrat Mawlana Abdur Rahim Motala, Hadhrat has two other brothers that are Ulama. However, few know about them. The two eldest of Hadhrat's stepbrothers, Mawlana Mohamed Cassim Bhorat & Mawlana Hasan Cassim Bhorat are also Ulama. Mawlana Mohamed passed away in 1998 at the age of 62 in a car accident. He spent his life as the principal of the maktab of Stanger, South Africa. Mawlana Hasan is still alive. He is currently about 73 years old and lives in Middelburg, South Africa, where he runs several makatib. I am in the process of writing an article about the two brothers and will inshallah post it on SunniForum. However, brother, please specify on what type of information you are looking for and I will do my best to write inshallah. Also, brother, you mentioned a passage in Jamal-e-Muhammadi about Hadhrat's cousin. Please kindly provide a reference so that I may see it myself and inshallah find out more about this cousin. However, Hadhrat did mentioned in his Ramadhaan bayaanaat (available on www.inter-islam.org) that he has a cousin (one of his maternal aunts' son) who is currently about 90 years old and was bay'ah to same Shaikh as his father. Hadhrat mentioned the piety of this brother as well. Maybe he is referring to this same cousin in Jamal-e-Muhammadi. Please provide a reference so that I may find out more inshallah. Finally, you also asked about ma'mulaat of the various Shaykhs. Which Shaykhs are you referring to? Please inshallah let me know and I will write what I know and see if I can find out more. Inshallah, this will be of benefit to everyone. Wassalaam. |

brother safwaan;
jazakallah khairan for your response. The following is what I found; jamal e muhammadi page 602 A similar statement was made by Shaykh Faqīr Mu%ammad !ā%ib, a khalīfa of Shaykh Mu%ammad Thānawī , when my cousin brother (paternal aunt’s son) Brother Yūsuf Warāchiya went to visit him in hospital. Shaykh Faqīr Mu%ammad !ā%ib used to cry excessively. He used to perceive the divine light that descends on the Holy Ka#ba for those performing ;awāf or offering 8alāh. He himself used to say that he could perceive the divine light descending for each individual person [around the Holy Ka#ba]. He would have his sight constantly fixed on the Holy Ka#ba at all times, with tears flowing from his eyes. If you could tell us the daily mamolaat of the mashaikh of the family that you know, stories about them, anything relevent. How did maulana yusuf's father meet a shaykh all the way in Bengal? Where does maulana yusuf pray his salat? Which masjid? Anything beneficial....also maybe you can mention maulana hashim saab or the son in law of maulana abdur raheem, maulana zakariya etc. duas |

brother safwaan; Regarding the ma'mulaat of the Mashaikh of our family, there are four Mashaikh as I mentioned before: Late Moulana Mohamed Bhorat, Hadhrat Moulana Hasan Bhorat, Hadhrat Moulana Abdur Rahim Motala, and Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf Motala. I plan to inshallah find out more, but I'm posting what I know so far below. Inshallah, it will be of benefit. Hadhrat Moulana Abdur Rahim Motala: Hadhrat awakens in the early part of the night to offer Salaah al-Tahajjud. He then returns to sleep until Salaah al-Fajr. After Salaah al-Fajr, Hadhrat remains in the masjid to recite Surah al-Yasin and engage in ‘ibadat until Ishraq. After performing four rak’aat of Salaah al-Ishraq, he returns home to eat breakfast and read the newspaper. Then, he bathes and departs for the madrasa at 8:45 AM. Hadhrat teaches Sahih al-Bukhari from 9:00 till 10:30 AM. Then, Hadhrat returns home. He then performs Salaah al-Duha and retires for qaylula. He awakens to eat lunch and then proceeds to the masjid for Salaah al-Dhuhr. After Salaah al-Dhuhr, Hadhrat recites Qur’an for an hour and then teaches until Salaah al-‘Asr. During this time, Hadhrat teaches various kitabs for varying levels of the ‘Alim course as well as hifdh classes. After Salaah al-‘Asr, Hadhrat rests and drinks tea. If there are any visitors, he will attend to them. If not, he will continue with the recitation of the Qur’an. During the summer, there will be a majlis al-dhikr about half an hour prior to Salaah al-Maghrib. During the winter, however, Hadhrat will continue to recite Qur’an until Salaah al-Maghrib. After Salaah al-Maghrib, Hadhrat offers Salaah al-Awwaabin and Salaah al-Tasbih. During the winter, there will be a majlis al-dhikr thereafter. However, during the summer, Hadhrat will return home to eat dinner. After Salaah al-Isha, Hadhrat returns home. During the winter, Hadhrat will eat dinner and then begin his work. However, during the summer, Hadhrat will proceed directly to his work. He will prepare his dars for the next day at this time. The madrasa is open everyday except for Friday. Thereafter, he retires to his room, reads from a book, and then sleeps at around 9:30 to 10:00 PM. On Fridays, there is a Durood Sharif majlis from Salaah al-‘Asr till Salaah al-Maghrib. In Ramadaan, there is a majlis al-dhikr daily after Salaah al-Dhuhr. After Salaah al-‘Asr, there is Khatm al-Khwajgaan. After Salaah al-‘Isha, there is a 40 Salaat-o-Salaam majlis. After Salaat-o-Salaam and du’a, Hadhrat delivers a short bayaan. Hadhrat is regular with the nawaafil fasts of Ashura, the first 9 days of Dhil Hijjah, and the 14th & 15th of Sha'baan. Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf Motala - Always engaged in dhikr al-qalbi & pas al-anfaas - Hadhrat Shaikh said to him that, “Moulvy Yusuf, you have beaten me in one thing and that is fikr for the Ummah.” - “I think I have nothing of iman except for my dreams” (Hadhrat) - Gifted in the interpretation of dreams - Unique quietness → Dislikes idle talk - Hadhrat used to teach the second half of Sahih al-Bukhari. He would teach daily from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, but if another teacher wished to make a change to schedule, he was flexible. - Hadhrat retired from madrasa duties this year to raise his young children. Now, he and his wife (who is an Alima) give their children Islamic education at home rather than sending them to maktab. - Since retirement, Hadhrat has made a habit of qaylula daily from 12 to 1 PM. Previously, he would not sleep during the day. - Hadhrat is very particular of the Sunnah. It can be seen in all of his actions, especially conduct with family. - Hadhrat has a habit of taking long walks for exercise. Despite his age of 65, he is physically fit and the only sign of age is his beard and hair, which have turned silver. Hadhrat also follows a strict diet according to his blood group. He follows the guidelines of the book, "Eat Right for Your Type". - Hadhrat has a habit of sleeping early. He sleeps soon after Salaah al-‘Isha & does not waste time. - There’s a weekly Salaat-o-Salaam gathering at DU Bury every Thursday night that Hadhrat attends. -- I have lesser information on Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf than Hadhrat Moulana Abdur Rahim. However, if people are interested, I can inshallah inquire more about the ma'mulaat of both Hadhraat. With regards to stories, there are many. I can't remember off the top of my head at the moment, but will post soon inshallah. Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf's father met Moulana Bangali while he was in Gujarat, I believe and took bay'ah at his hands. Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf lives between Blackburn and Preston in England. I'm not sure which masjid he prays in while in Blackburn, but when he is in Preston, he prays salaah at Ma'had al-Shuhada. With regards to Moulana Hashim Sahab, I don't know much about him. I don't have a close family relation to him. I'm very close to Moulana Zakariya though. Mashallah, he's a very pious individual, but not many people know about him. Alhamdulillah, I've been able to have stay with him and benefit from him because of the close family relation. I have heard the he is mustajaab al-da'waat. He gives a dars of Riyadh al-Saliheen every Thursday, which can be listened to on www.theseekerspath.com. Please let me know if you have any more questions inshallah. Wassalaam. |

jazakallah khairan for the facts you have mentioned. May ALLAH bless you. I have a question. Once maulana bilal bawa db mentioned that he knows many people who read 1 quraan between asr and maghrib. This made me think. I prayed salah once behind maulana yusuf motala db and we prayed the salah very quickly. i.e. I remember that we were in the tashahud position and I had just started Atihaayat and just recited a few words and hazrat started salaam. This made me think that maybe hazrat is one of those people who finishes 1 quraan between asr and maghrib.
With regards to more questions; 1. Do you know the exact daily azkaar of the 2 respected mashaikh with the number of juz they read per day etc. 2. How do mureeds interact with them? I mean those who keep islaahi taaluq do they phone shaykh or write? 3. Who are the major khulafah of the mashaikh? 4. How many hours do they sleep and rough time they wake up? It seems like they have a great routine mashallah. Sleeping early is an important lesson that I learnt from your account. Please feel to write more. Could you tell us more about maulana zakariya db and his daily routine, mamolaat etc. |

However, I'm unsure of whether or not this is truly Hadhrat's habit. I don't know much about either Shaikh's daily ma'mulaat & adhkaar, but I can find out inshallah if you would like. Please inform me. 2) Murids generally interact both ways, through phone and through writing. However, I believe that most murids find it easier to communicate through letters due to the ru'b possessed by both Mashaikh, especially Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf Sahab. 3) Both mashaikh have a number of khulafa. I will try and name as many as I can. Hadhrat Moulana Abdur Rahim Motala 1) Moulana Rashad Patel - Secretary, Ma'had al-Rashid al-Islami, Chipata, Zambia Hadhrat Moulana Yusuf Motala 1) Moulana Abdur Raheem Limbada - Teacher, Darul Uloom Bury 2) Shaikh Riyadh al-Haq 3) Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya Patel These are the only khulafa that I can think of at the moment. There are more, though. Inshallah, if anyone else knows, please post. 4) As with the ma'mulaat, I would have to inquire about this. Please inform me if you would like me to do so. Regarding Moulana Zakariya's daily routine & ma'mulaat, I don't know much about this either. But same with the Mashaikh, I can inquire if you would like me to. Please let me know inshallah. Wassalaam. |

I have heard that maulana zakariya db reads 1 quran per week Mashallah. This information I have. Please pass my salams to maulana zakariya db when you meet him inshallah and tell him that it is from a brother from london who once sent some books to him. It is nothing urgent though.

![]() Please forgive me, brother. I have tried, but both Hadhraat have been busy lately. I have been trying for some time to get a hold of them, but due to my own work as well as the Hadhraat being busy, I haven't been able to. When I do inshallah get a hold of them, I will find out and relay the information. Please forgive me once again for the delay. ![]() |
