![]() I've been looking for a sound English translation of the Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din. It seems that there are a few translations but I'm wondering which one to pick. As you can see I live in the Netherlands and ![]() that can be sent to the Netherlands. ![]() |

I've just moved to Netherlands (Amsterdam) and would like to get in touch with muslims residing here, who are living here while taking good care of their imaan. Please let me know if you are able to get the book here, because, I am also searching for a way to get books here. Insha Allah.. |

Al-salamu 'alaykum. As of yet there are no quality complete translations. DKI have recently produced an expensive edition which can be shipped to Holland:
http://kitaabun.com/shopping3/produc...oducts_id=3942 As you can see from the sample at the bottom, the English leaves much to be desired and is a classic example of an Arab translating into English when not properly qualified. The best translations so far are sections published by ITS. They are written by professors with a mastery over English and good grounding in Arabic. IMO the best translations of any text are usually a collaboration between a master writer in the target language (who has some knowledge of the translated language) working with an expert of the translated language who has good grounding in the target language. This is rare, but when done properly can produce excellent results. Look at what Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have done in translating Russian into English. I have a few friends and colleagues with whom I am working on this with for English. Insha'Allah we will complete Ibn al-Qayyim's Madarij al-Salikin. |

![]() I will again emphasize the quality of the ITS translation- seriously, it's quite apt. It's not as good as Muhammad Abdul-Haqq al-Ansari's translations, but it's the second best I've seen besides his. @above: You mean Madaarij al-Salikeen, yes? I believe some other people are also translating that. Should be interesting, since most people say that it is impossible to render well into English due to the level of the Arabic. |

:@above: You mean Madaarij al-Salikeen, yes? I believe some other people are also translating that. Should be interesting, since most people say that it is impossible to render well into English due to the level of the Arabic. We have debated whether translating longer works should be done since the content is rather scholarly and academic and one seeking to learn such matters should really learn Arabic. We have thought of first translating some shorter works such as al-Ghazali's al-Arba'in fi Usul al-Din. The rationale being that shorter primers are less time consuming, are more likely to be read, and are more suitable to English-speaking audiences. However the counter-argument is that other large works have been translated in part or in whole. We wanted to translate Ibn al-Qayyim as we see him attacked by those who fail to understand his true status. If they looked into Madarij al-Salikin this might change insha'Allah. |
