ustadha Zainab Ansari(Shafi Fiqh) and Ustadha Hedaya Hartford (Hanafi Fiqh) are prominent among female scholars.
Their fiqh work is more about women related issues http://www.sunnipath.com/about/ustadhazaynabansari.aspx http://www.hedayahartford.com/pages/about.htm |

I'm just asking you is she scholar or ...? she is a scholar but a ghair muqallid one. so to them she is a scholar but for us obv she isnt. i was once a big fan of al huda for reaching out to so many modern muslims but now i know they do a lot of damage as well. i dunno how the balance is in this situation. so i just try and stop people from al huda and look for alternatives for women to adopt a female scholarly figure who is muqallid. ustadha sobia (wife of sheikh kamaluddin) and her fellow teachers have all done dars-e-nizami and are aalimahs. they need to be promoted more on television to counter dr. farhat hashmi. |

Alimah Ayesha Bewley for her scholastic translation and some very good books that most muslimah can understand. I don't think the madarasssah with the way it is taught can produce people of high calibre. the reason is obvious these institute were set up (by desi cupboard missognonist) to protect their daughter and not to produce high calibre alimah. Ofcourse there may be some exception.
The deos are averse to comming to TV and generally do not have the aptitute to appear on TV. We need the likes of Mufti Taqi who are intelectual and scholars of high calibre. |

Assalaamu'alaikum,
There are female scholars around, we just don't hear about them because, having learnt their deen, they know not to put themselves out there too much! I'm sure if you go to any country where Islamic studies is pursued to a high level by men, there will be women in the background doing the same thing. Often the wives of prominent Shuyukh will be Shaykhas or 'Alimahs themselves, but because they don't write widely circulated books and don't do public talks you won't hear of them so much. Personally, I think more important than knowing who the 'biggest' female scholars are, there should be a concerted effort to ensure that every Muslim woman has access to a knowdgeable 'alimah sister in her community who actively teaches in the community - I think this is the best way to increase the Islamic literacy of the women of this ummah. If this was implemented then maybe there might be more prominent female scholars.... allahu a'lam. |
