RIYADH: Crown Prince Naif, deputy premier and minister of interior, opened a symposium on “Salafism: A Shariah approach and a national demand,” organized by the Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University here Tuesday and commended its objectives.

Prince Naif said Saudi Arabia would continue to follow the Salafist ideology and denounced those who create doubts about this moderate Islamic ideology and link it with terrorism and extremism.

"Salafism is rooted in the Qur'an and Sunnah and calls for peaceful coexistence with other faith communities and for respecting their rights," the crown prince said. "We have to stand united against those who launch smear campaigns on Salafism."

He also laid the cornerstone for a number of educational projects worth SR2.3 billion at the university.

Suleiman Abalkhail, president of the university, thanked Prince Naif for opening the event.

“The Kingdom is based on the moderate Salafi ideology,” he said, adding that the Saudi government has been following the teachings of Islam in all its affairs and relations.

He said more than 100 religious experts from around the world would take part in the symposium to discuss 120 research papers on seven core subjects.

This seminar aims to achieve several goals such as shedding light on the doctrinal teachings of the Salafist movement, clear misconceptions about Salafism, clarify the roots of Saudi government regulations and its rightful principles and lastly provide a clear idea about Islam’s approach toward non-Muslims.

The core subjects include Salafism, an approach pursued by the state since its foundation and its connection to Islam; misconceptions about the Salafi approach; the Salafi approach and its connection with the modern religious discourse, the relationship between the Saudi state and the Salafi approach in terms of originality and application; and the link between the Salafi approach and school curricula.

Hilarious! Salafism is a sect it has in most areas nothing to with Quran wa Sunnah as for the Kingdom being based on Salafism that is obviously fallacious does Salafism preach the usurping of the wealth of the Ummah does Salafism preach a Monarchy type of system? does Salafism allow Non-Muslims to reside in Jazeeratul Arab or American soldiers enjoying themselves in palace like compounds. I am against Salafism(Wahhabism) but the remarks made by the prince are hilarious.

I think it's funny that they are now trying to define Salafism, after calling people towards it for years. Not only that, but it appears that the focus is really on issues relating to Jihad and war, whereas the bulk of Salafi propaganda has mainly been anti-Madhab or Aqeeda related. And considering who's sponsoring the event, I wouldn't be surprised if they are just going to be taking pro-government stances just to appease the Western powers.

The newest generation of scholars will not consist of lions like Shaikh Abdur-Rahman al-Barrak, but rather, government-ridden donkeys like Abdul-Muhsin al-Ubaykaan.

It is, I suppose, the inevitable result of the course of that state.

In addition, salafism is a most divided sect. From the jihadi (jihadi salafis) salafis on one end, to the staunch nationalists at the exact opposite end of the spectrum (aka saudi salafis).

That's why it's completely pointless to refute salafis as a single group - since their own creed varies wildly (Group A calls B Murji'ah, whilst Group B calls A Khawaarij - sounds familiar?)

In general the "jihadi salafis" tend to be more sympathetic towards muqallids (and Hanafis in particular), in part because of their staunch and unwavering support for the Taliban. It's hypocritical to support the Taliban and condemn Taqleed. It's encouraging to see them supporting both rather than condemning both.

This is a good sign for unity of our fragmented ummah, inshaa Allah.

That's why this conference is probably pointless. Someone with more familiarity with it could correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like these are palace scholars, and so they're going to tow that line, while other Salafis will pay no heed to what they have to say. Perhaps they will even attempt their own definition of Salafiyyah to refute these people.

As for the "Jihadi Salafis", I used to be more sympathetic towards them as well. However, their support of the Taliban has for years rested on them lying to Arab Salafis and claiming that the Taliban either aren't Deobandis at all, or are Salafi-inclined ignorant Hanafis that don't know much about the differences between the various sects. Not only that, but they tend to be the most extreme with regards to their beliefs, claiming things even most garden variety Salafis would shudder at.

Wish he had said that the kingdom will follow an Islamic approach.
