asalaamu alaikum wr wb
There are some Sunni Muslim women I know who say that the female hijab also includes the chin, even, up to alittle under the lips. I havent found any scholarly rulings on this, does anyone know any actual scholarly rulings from any of the 4 schools that state the chin is included as part of the awrah to be covered by the jilbab/hijab? These sisters are Maliki and are saying this. jazakhallakhairoon.. |

![]() My understanding is that scholarly opinion is divided on whether or not the face (except the eyes) needs to be covered (niqab), with some saying that it is fard but all in agreement that it is at least wajib (highly recommended). I am not aware of any specific opinions on covering only as far as the chin, though it would seem intuitively that the more of the exposed face that is covered the better. Also it would make it easier to quickly pull up over the face if a non-mahran approached ![]() |

Wa'alaikum assalaam wrwb,
As far as I am aware, though I myself wear niqab and believe it to be wajib, there are many scholars who emphasise that it is hijab itself which is fard while the difference of opinion about niqab is between it being wajib or a sunnah mu'akkadah. If a sister is of the opinion that it is sunnah mu'akkadah and for whatever reason she chooses to wear just hijab, which is a valid opinion, as far as I am aware I have not heard anything about requiring to cover the chin as well (I believe some Ahmadiyya and Shia women do this). As the face constitutes the hairline to the bottom of the chin and from ear to ear. I don't know about the maliki opinion but as far as the hanafi opinion goes: http://spa.qibla.com/issue_view.asp?...=1775&CATE=128 wallahu a'lam. |

Jazakhallakhairoon sisters for your assistance! Ive always covered my chin simply because ive always felt it must be part of the awrah and the face is just the oval of the face and plus...the more covered the better. I dont wear niqab though, but so wear hejab and jilbab so I figure...the more the better. You know. I was trying to find a scholarly ruling...jazakhallakhairoon...from what it seems Hanafi scholars say its permissible and even some say its preferred. Personally Im unsure why they say its difficult...actually I personally dont find it hard to cover my chin...but again, maybe its because Ive done it since I started to wear hejab in the 90's.
I will be sure to pass this on, as sometimes I get questions about it... Also sisters, how do I gain access to the sisters section? Thank you. Fi aman Allah |
