Barak Allah
but what if, because the poor customer doesn’t know how much the item is worth, agrees to pay 2-3x the amount?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

1) We were unable to find the story in reference.

2) A Muslim businessman should conduct himself in accordance with the laws of Shariah. Truthfulness is a very important characteristic which ought to be in every businessman.

A truthful, honest businessman will be with the Messengers, Siddiqeen and martyrs (in the hereafter) Tirmidhi

It is imperative for every Muslim to be truthful at all times and therefore you will have to say the correct price you bought it for. Below are some narrations on the virtues of a honest businessman:

Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said “The transactors have the right of cancelling the transaction as long as they do not separate from each other. If they are truthful in their transacting they will be blessed in their transaction, but if they conceal the faults of the item or speak lies then they might make a profit but they will be deprived of its blessings. False oaths are a means of selling the item but decrease its profit.”

Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم “A truthful businessman will be under the shade of the throne of Allah Ta’ala on the day of resurrection”

Truthfulness is also a means of peace and contentment.

Leave that which is doubtful for that which is not doubtful, for verily truthfulness is a means of contentment and lies cause doubt.

Consider the following warning for those who are not truthful in their business.

Rifa’a رضى الله عنه narrates that once he left with Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم for the Musalla. On the way Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم saw some people trading. Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم called out “O businessmen! They immediately responded and looked up towards Nabi Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said: Businessmen will be raised on the day of resurrection as fujjar (sinners) except those who fear Allah Ta’ala, they are honest and truthful.

Below is a pledge necessary for all businessmen:

1. To be governed in my business by my conscious of Allah Ta’ala the All-Knowing the All-Seeing.
2. To be conscious of accountable in the court of Allah Ta’ala.
3. To be governed by the Shariah laws of business and trade.
4. To study the Sariah laws of business I am engaged in.
5. To constantly correspond with the Ulama to make my business Shariah compliant.
6. To be polite to my employees, honest to my customers, co-operative with my suppliers, lenient to my debtors and pay my creditors timeously.
7. To declare war on interest.
8. To be punctual on my Salah and give some charity dialy.
9. To advance the cause of the Ummah through my business and please Allah Ta’ala.
10. To have firm conviction that Allah Ta’ala is my sole provider.

And Allah knows best

Wassalam
