Default How to break up a fight without a break stick
Hi,

So most of the information I read about breaking up a dog fight that your Pit Bull is in, includes the use of a break stick. I'm just your average Pit Bull parent who doesn't carry a break stick around with me in my pocket! (Do some of you actually do this?) So realistically, what is the best way to break up a fight when you don't have a break stick available. I don't have an actual scenario in mind -- let's just say two dogs are fighting off-leash and at least one of them is a Pit Bull.

Thanks!
Autumn

PS -- I'm new to forums and I am sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. This is the first question I've posted. I did read info on here about breaking up fights, but it involved break sticks.

A break Stick is the quickest and easiest way to break up a fight these dogs can inflict serious injury fast so you want to part them as quick as possible and most of the time if you are dealing with bulldogs they are not going to let go easily and some would just rather let them fight until one quits before trying to break them loose without a break stick. If you don't have a break stick you are really going to be in trouble this is really very irresponsible not to carry one wherever your dog goes you should have one. If you have a pitbull you should have a breakstick no excuses and no exceptions.

Thanks for your response. I guess that's 1 for "Yes, I actually carry a break stick around with me in my pocket". I understand people feel strongly about owning a breakstick if you have a Pit Bull -- that's why breaksticks were in the information I read about breaking up fights. But surely even a responsible owner who owns a break stick could find herself in a situation where she is without one. I thought perhaps people could speak to that situation.

IF say you are in your house or in your yard and your two bull dogs break into a fight, You can get a broom and use the wooden end to pry open their mouth. Some say you can spray them in the face with a hose... but I can't see how this will stop two dogs trying to kill one another. Another is pepper spray.... well Mace. Some people swear by it. There ARE other options. But the quickest and safest way is going to be a break stick.

I have heard of using the water hose to the nose, the bic lighter to the nose, mace, but keep in mind if you have yourself a game dog they won't let go no matter what you try a break stick is the safest most effective way to pry them off it worked for dog men it will work for anyone. Trust me you don't want to have to use alternate methods I have used my finger to pry a dog off another dog and lucky for me I didn't have my dog redirect on me or try to take my finger off. The point of me telling you this is because it can be dangerous and you don't always have a lot of time so use common sense and use what's been known to work for years a break stick.

Sadie:
A break stick would have come in handy last night when Jud got a hold of a whole cooked chicken breast! I attempted to pry his mouth open by hand but Realized real quick how hard that was and stopped before he decided to chomp down on my fingers!!!! It is VERY dangerous to stick your fingers in a dogs mouth. Especially one chomping down a while chicken breast! @.@ I just let him have it. Wasn't worth getting hurt over.

Oh I know it is and believe me I didn't want to do it but I had no choice my dog would have killed this dog and this is why I am saying you don't want to be left in a situation where a break stick is not available. I was successful and it's not something I would ever recommend to anyone lol.

Yes.

It's a whole lot easier to just make a habit of carrying a set around than to panic, scramble around and hope to hell you can find something to use if, when and where you need it.

I have break sticks scattered through out my house. I keep one in the truck and have one in my bag when I go out. It's also a useful loose dog/assailant beater.

If I didn't have one, I'd use what's at hand. Leashes, laundry baskets....etc

Yes,I really carry one with me,anywhere I expect to be around a APBT.I have a couple on my dog yard.I have a couple in my house and I take one in the car when I haul a dog somewhere. They just slip right in your pocket there's no reason to be caught with your pants down if you are somewhere with your dog.I realize you're "just the average "APBT owner but if your dog ever gets into a fight you'll appreciate if you have a breaking stick with you.

Sadie: Yeah I need to get me one. But I have to wait until finances clear up a little bit, LOL. But it is really a handy tool ^^ Highly recommended to have one.

OP: At the same time though, you need to check your city laws and make sure there is no ban on items like break sticks. Because some places consider it dog fighting paraphernalia.

Okay, I am hearing a lot of "YES, we carry one!" I'm glad to know this. I guess "average Pit Bull parent" should equal "carries a breakstick".

Believe it or not but there are a lot of 'average' pit bull owners out there that have never heard of a break stick -OR- Refuse to get one because to them Break stick=Dog Fighting.

I'm afraid lots don't carry one but I would feel better if every APBT owner had one.It just shows that they're a responsible owner.

I bought 5 collars and I got my break stick for free so if you end up buying collars he will work out a deal on the break stick.
