Default Oh, Roxie...
So it seems as though I never get off easy with a dog. First my beagle x Buddy had issues with dog and human aggression, cancer, etc. Now Roxie is having issues (more issue, i mean... Shes always had issues), and just when shes been improving SO much! She developed some excess fat in her mammary glands over the winter (she's spayed, but looked a tiny bit preggo). I was told that this was usual for 3 year old dogs and older by the vet, but it amazes me that her body would store fat there... She's not exactly a dog that stores fat ANYWHERE. But the vet said not to worry. Now that I've upped her exercise even more, the fat has vanished... Except for one side, where it's pretty hard.

So I'm thinking tumor. Gonna get that checked out this week. I mean, she's really not even as energetic and crazy as she used to be. Could be weather, but I sense that something is really off about her. It scares the shit out of me, I really cannot stand to lose this dog, not after what happened to Buddy and all the work I've put into Roxie. This dog means the world to me, I can't only have three years with her.

With everything else going on... Please just wish us luck. I know I could have done so much better with Buddy, and have tried SO hard to improve with Roxie... It can't all be for nothing, right?

So sorry about Roxie having problems.
I've never heard of female dogs gaining fat in*just* their M glands due to age. You might want to find another vet... Really.
A hard lump is not a good sign, but that's for a vet to decide.

All dogs have some sort of problem. If it's not health, it's behavior. Even a super healthy, sound dog can be a problem due to breed traits or exercise needs! But each dog's problems can/will teach you something. You can not "win" with bad genetics. A unsound dog(Mr.Buddy) can only be managed. He had you learning what to do with that crap! Now you know!
Genetically bad health can only be dealt with as it happens. You give the dog the best you can, then lovingly send then on their way when it becomes to much for them(euthanasia).

If for some reason Roxie only has 3 years to live, how better to spend them then with you? Something gets us ALL sooner or later.
~Good Luck to you and Roxie~
Keep us posted

Sorry to hear about Roxie, and I think the best thing to do is to find another vet, also.

I hope it's nothing serious.

Thanks, guys. I am definately switching vets. It's just gonna be hard because I can walk to our current vet (I don't have a car) and all the other vets are FAR away, like an hour at least driving. So that's def gonna suck, but the current vet is honestly an idiot... I hate using them.

We have worked so hard with Roxie's behavioral issues, and most of my family just wanted to put her down because her separation anxiety was so bad. I've worked my butt off training her and working her, and she's now to the point where she can be alone in a confined area, and without needing drugs to keep her calm.

Needless to say, I am not rescuing another dog... I'm getting one from a reputable breeder. It breaks my heart that Roxie is such a great dog and has incredible potential, but she has such bad luck with health stuff you can hardly do anything because she has to heal all the time or something else gets in the way.

I'll keep you in my prayers.
It's great that you are looking for another vet.
When I was a child we rescued this 1 year old monster black dog, he really looked like he came from a horror movie. When I was 15 or 16 he started getting these lumps on his underside, he was much older than your girl he was about 12. The vet said it was fat. two years later he was so ill we had to put him down. So ill it gave me nightmares, so I'll spare you the details. It broke our hearts. Although our old dog didn't have exactly the same symptoms as yours, or the same sex, it just goes to show that vets are not always rights. I hope the best for your girl. I wish we were pro-active like you, he could have had a chance.
Once again I'll keep you in my prayers and I'm sure it will work out.

Ssmiechowski, just so you know, lots of lumps can just be fatty tumors. 12 is pretty senior for a large dog and you really didn't know his exact age. At 14 some medical problem usually starts setting in. I have a older dog who was spayed really late. At 12 she got fatty lumps, at 13 she has intense breast cancer. The two are not related(unless you count getting old as the link).
But it's always good to get a 2nd opinion if your gut says so.

I'm sorry for your loss, RIP Monster dog.

Actually, that is exactly what the vet told us at first. Maybe it wasn't related, we never bothered to investigate further. He just became extremely ill all of the sudden and the vet said it spread all over his body, so I don't think we could have got an answer anyways. We just brought him home and buried him in my mothers flower garden, his favorite place to sleep. I learned my lesson tho, always get second opinions when you're gut says so.
Hopefully, ignitethis' girl will be just fine and the vet is right. This forum makes me include a lot of people in my prayers lol. Actually, ignitethis you get double prayers for your girl tonight because your story hits home.

I definitely agree with the others I would find another vet. It doesn't sound normal.

Well, the vet can't get us in until NEXT Friday (the 13th), so that pisses me off. There's no way for me to get to Buddy's old vet (we moved a year before Buddy died, but I loved her vet) any time soon, so unfortunately I'm going to have to use this one once more. While I'm there, I'm going to get all her records so we can switch vets.

Even on the phone, they are SO rude! I said I needed an appt, and they're like, "what's wrong with Rusty?" and so I tell them that I think ROXIE may have cancer... They kinda shouted at me that I could never determine that without seeing the doctor... Gee, wonder why I was making an appointment?

Thats the only news I have right now, sorry. Roxie is doing well, otherwise. I am so paranoid though, I really pray she doesn't end like Buddy did. Thank you, everyone

Any chance of a mobile vet that can come to you? We have one in our area that has a full service mobile vet van thingie and he only charges $60 for a home visit. The regular vets charge around the same price for you to go to them, so its a great solution for people with transportation problems. Maybe google search mobile vet and your area to see if there is one?
