Default Bringing a foreign dog into the US.. anybody ever done it?
As some of you already know, Ill be returning to the US in July or August and Ill be bringing Sam up with me on the trip. I *think* all I need is proof of rabies vaccine. And when we get to the border they just check to make sure shes not visibally sick with anything that can infect humans.

Has anybody ever crossed the border with a dog into the US recently? Any suggestions or do you know if Ill need anything else?

When you get a rabies shot either from the state health department or a vet, they give you a plastic collar tag and a slip of paper. (Here anyway - dunno if other states are the same but I assume so) You can get it translated and notarized at any notaria - google "victoria tamaulipas notaria" and plenty come up. Good luck!!I don't exactly live like royalty! I don't know if you've heard, but juarez is.... kind of a hellhole ! Haha... I mean there are many things I love about Mexico don't get me wrong, and there are gems here and there, remnants of the booming economy and tourism Juarez had years ago... but the day my hubs gets his green card, we're outta there!! But we'll always go back for the tacos. They don't know how to do delicious greasy street tacos in America! Something about health codes or something... pfffff

I bet I'm whiter than you! I'm from Vermont originally, my family is British on one side and Norwegian on the other. It don't get much whiter than that! Lol! It absolutely adds to the crap people say, I hear ya! My spanish is getting pretty good though, so at least mexican people don't look at me like I'm so out of place anymore.
I've heard tamaulipas is getting bad, but I'm sure its just like here - you just gotta know which places and people to avoid, just like any city anywhere.

I've looked up the exact same thing, as I'll have the exact same issue with my dog, cat, and 2 turtles.
Customs and Border Protection:
http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/...d.ctt/pets.pdf
Center for Disease Control:
CDC - Bringing an Animal into U.S.: Dogs - Animal Importation

Don't forget your rabies certificate needs to be translated into English. Where will you be crossing into TX?
I don't know how the CBP agents are at other ports of entry, but in El Paso there's a wide range of strictness among the agents. (I commute to TX for work every day) I've had some take one look at me and know I'm harmless, and some who follow strict protocol and interrogate me and search every inch of my car. It's a crapshoot. Hope you get an agent who doesn't have a thing against pit bulls!!

I've never done this myself, but I googled - Mexico to USA animal entry and got a website of the Centers for Disease Control that states that a certificate of health is not a requirement to bring a pet dog into the usa. However the dog could be subject to an examination and if there is any sign of any disease/infection subject to quarantine. Also the dog must have been vaccinated at least 30 days prior for rabies. It also states that some individual states may have additional requirements. I don't know what state you would be coming into, but if you did a google search I'm sure it would be easy to find these as well.

My family thinks Im a nutter and my friends always tell me to get back home where I belong lol, but I just say.. who cares about being in a safe place if it means Im miserable? Ive been down here for a year now, and youre so lucky that you have a HOT shower to go visit! Although now that its warming up the cold shower does feel pretty damn good. Are you white or of Mexican or latina descent? Im white so people give me a lot of shit saying that Im lucky I havent gotten kidnapped or raped yet

Ive checked as well and it seems everyone else has pretty much covered the big ones. Rabies 30 days before, no visible sickness, possible health exam at the border, etc..

i've brought 3 dogs into the country in the last 4 years, and have not needed proof of anything to get them in. the first time i did it, i thought it would be way harder than it was. our customs agents were definitely more lax than the agents to get the dogs out of their country!

Im going back in July, but my hubby wont qualify for a visa until May next year. Im going before him to set up housing, job and get my horrible credit back in line. Also this way I can send him money from the states while he waits.

Haha, I have to agree about the taco thing.. Last time I was checking out chichen Itza I could not get enough of the fresh salsa and street food.. Also the rock lobsters visible in aquariums from the streets sold in the restaurants near playacar the small town where the ferry goes to Cozumel is awesome.

realrasta lol, hell yeah there is NOTHING like fresh salsa made in Mexico. I dont know if Cozumel would really be considered very authentic Mexican though lol, its one of the few nice places in the country but its mostly populated with tourists, gueros and rich folks
But I did not eat salsa at Cozumel or Playacar.. That was all about the sea food, reef diving, fishing, night life.. I ate salsa and street food all through the small towns near chichen Itza where everyone still looks Mayan.

Oh yeah.. .I did some diving in cenotes.. Funny all the catfish in those things and it can be quite scary to get in and out of those things.

Cool! We're in the same boat! YOU UNDERSTAND!!! Sometimes, I get a lot of crap from some people, especially because not only Mexico, but Juarez of all places... I hear: "You know, there's plenty of good AMERICAN men in Texas! Why the hell do you go over there?!?! Are you insane???" ....Countries have borders, LOVE doesn't!

I was hoping youd come post here Emma lol. Ill be crossing at the Matamoros/Brownsville port and do you more about the rabies certificate? Ill be getting Sams rabies shot here soon.. Should my vet know what that is? And how do i get a translation? Lol sorry im just stressed about the trip since ill be going alone most likely and possibly by bus and then walking cross the border.

I always thought it would be nice to live on the border and work on the other side like that. You must live like royalty having an american income down here!
