Default Boarding kennels...Why do so many people hate them?
Recently I have noticed some friends of mine...and my father, have expressed a dislike for what i do for a living. They treat me as though...and imply, i work for a canine "prison". To me...i see it as MUCH nicer then that.
We feed whatever the owner brings, or a high quality grain free kibble...blue buffalo. We make sure ALL dogs have access to the indoor and outdoor portions of the kennel. We seperate "no mingle" dogs from the play groups and give all dogs at least 4-6 hours of daily yard time. There are pools, misters and shade cloth as well as full CLEAN water buckets available and we provide blankets and chews for all boarding dogs...how is this PRISON??? I mean..sure....they stay in runs overnight and between play times...but these runs are HUGE...I mean like 8ft by 3 ft outdoor and a LARGE crate portion indoor.

Yea well haters are starting to get on my last nerve...my dad said places like these are "hard on a dogs psyche" and he would "never leave his poor dogs in a cage". Like..wth????

Its just because they dont understand how nice these places can be. And so many people now a days think that dogs are mini humans. Sounds like you guys have a sweet set up for the dogs there! If I was leaving for a long time and had the money, Id put Sam up in a place like that for sure! sounds fun!

Because some people just don't get them. Would I board a dog at one? Probably not, unless I personally knew people that worked there. But do I think they're evil? No

If being on a cage was that hard on them I wouldn't have a sane dog left. Sounds like you guys got a good thing going there. Some people think leaving a dog outside over night is fatal though.

i can understand that entirely. I just get mad when people act like we run a prison or something. i think it is important to get to know the people that are looking after your dogs..and honestly..so does my boss, we prefer to meet with clients months before taking the dog. Still, I mean..i get not leaving your dog in someone elses care...its the complete and total hatred for places like this that annoys me.

Its in Harmony CA,...in SLO county, although in order to assure the safety of and liability..we only board dogs from our county. Makes it easier to contact the right and usual veterinarian in case of emergency.

probably becuase boarding kennels were not always "so nice"
it was not that long ago when kennels meant a small cement floored kennel in a large room with 20 other barking screaming dogs. many many dogs got sick and many died from the illnesses brought about from these places becuase they didnt mind if dogs were or not vaccinated they took any dog for the right price.

obviously now that people are becoming more aware of animals rights these places have gotten a million times better and are more like a humans vacation resort where the workers and owners actually CARE about dogs happiness and comfort.

and of coarse even nowdays some people have dogs who are incrdabely attatched to them some people have dogs for years who have never been left alone then suddenly they want to vist a sister, brother, mom, dad or kids and cannot take the dog along so then the dog is frigthend and miserable becuase its never been away from its owner before and it seems almost truamatized due to the owners not ever socielizing the dog.

This makes some degree of sense. I just wish my family and friends would ask more questions rather then assume. You know? I can respect that someone would not want thier pet in an unstable and dangerous environment. I honestly think for people who are first time boarding they should take advantage of the offer of a complimentery overnight trial. It lets the dog know you are coming back and lets US know the dog can handle the seperation from its humans,.

The kennel I board my dogs at sounds a lot like the one you work at - I think they're wonderful, and I know my dogs are likely getting better care there than they would just at someone's house - these people know dogs, the place is extremely clean and organized and my dogs come back to me happy, not traumatized. Well sounds like a great opportunity for you educate the closed-minded. Annoying, but necessary.

True..i could just continue to educate them. I am tempted to get permission from my clients once i get a camera to practice photography using the dogs during field time..so perhaps I will have a chance to show my family and friends via my photography that the dogs here are STOKED not scared.

do you mind if I ask how much your place charges? I am having a hellish time finding a good kennel here. It seems they're either all the "we let the doggies play with other doggies all day and then kennel them at night" (which I don't want) or insanely expensive resort types where they have private climate controlled rooms long walks and play sessions, or the standard caged boarding.

Sigh.

The kennel I take Bentley to is not quite so nice but each kennel has a 20' run attached and the dogs get 2 walks daily as well as a kennel worker (like yourself) and a qualified vet always on hand. It's $25/day around holidays and $23/day regularly. If your dog is having an extended stay beyond a week, they'll cut a break if asked.

Firstly, awesome to see some are not opposed to boarding kennels Our rates are he lowest in the county since we are a small kennel in a small town..on a dirt road lol. we charge 17 for little dogs and 20 for the big guys.... only 10 for regular day care attenders (including no mingle dogs who still show up and we offer FREE stays for family emergencies to regular customers.)

Holy schnikees. I'm jealous! Ours are about $30 a day for the standard boarding, and the pet resort type places are a minimum of $60 a day.

I'm absolutely not opposed to boarding. Amy is a tough little cookie who needs a good handler, and she needs to be safe and kept from other dogs. I'm just looking for the right place for her - I've NEVER heard of a place that gives dogs as much attention as yours and charges that little.

Mind = blown.

I have taken Amy to a place like that, but it's an hour away and their hours are atrocious. So I have to take off work to get here there and back, and they're closed Sundays. I'm surprised in a dog city like Washington, DC there aren't better options.

Well, to be fair..we hold..at max capacity, 15 big dogs and 20 little ones...So its not too hard to give them the time and attention they need. Plus, we would not make profit charging a lot since..we are far out of the way.

Their hours aren't that bad. They're attached to the vet so their hours are 7a to 5p Monday through Friday and 7a to 1p on Saturdays and though they are closed on Sundays, you can schedule a time to pick up your dog.
