I have a pit bull puppy who is almost 7 months old. He isn't the most hyper dog in the world but it seems like he tires out too quickly and always has since I got him. (which was at 8 weeks old) I feed him the best food I can afford on my budget and I keep him healthy. Maybe he's just growing still and will have more energy when he gets older? He has no problem running until he can't stand when playing with other dogs but when I'm playing with him and his toys, walking him or even trotting him along side my bike he lags behind me. Even if I want to just run him down the block, he'll lag behind me and go as slow as he can. It's not like I exercise him 24/7 and expect him to give me more, I'd just like enough energy to go on a quick jog or walk. Do you think he'll ever have more energy or am I stuck with a future couch potato?
Any input will help, Thanks. |

From the angle in the third picture he looks slightly overweight....I could be wrong though.
Remember he's only 7 months so you don't want to work him too hard. Have you spoken to your vet about this issue? I would mention it and see what they say. Also you may just be lucky have have a lower energy pup. There are a lot of things it could be |

He DOES look overweight.
It could be that what you're asking him to do isn't as fun as playing with another dog, so he just doesn't want to. My 6 month old puppy will play tug with another dog for hours, but if *I* try to tug with him... it's like I'm trying to be the "cool parent" Maybe take some treats (or a portion of his food, because he could lose some weight) or a toy with you, and make it FUN! |

Trust me, he's not overweight lol I think it's the camera angle or probably cause he just ate before the picture. I have taken him to the vet just a week ago to get fixed and he had a blood test done, the vet never said anything so I guess he's fine. I haven't talked to the vet about his energy because I feel like I'm just over reacting. I feed him kirkland brand puppy food which is about as good as I can afford, not saying it's bad, it's gotten 4 out 5 stars on dog food reviews. Last month he lost all his baby teeth and has his adult ones now. @kahnesmommy, maybe that's how Blue will be when he gets older too I don't know. I'm just hoping for a running partner when he's older.

![]() Well my vet has never said anything about his weight so I don't know if he is or not but in person or in most pictures he looks good for his size. I feed my adult pit (9 years old) 4 cups a day and he doesn't exercise. He gets a run once or twice a week but thats it. If I don't then you start to see quite a bit of ribs, so I think it just depends on the dog. ---------- Post added at 02:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 PM ---------- ![]() ---------- Post added at 02:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------

Yes, it's okay to see rib's a little bit! He is over weight and yes it depends on the dog! I'd say your adult looks pretty decent. I guess it depends on how you like your dogs too. You should always be able to easily feel their ribs, and I mean easily, like your fingers in between them.
If your adult was mine, I'd take a couple lbs off him, I like to see ton and muscle definition in these dogs. Vet's are a joke when it comes to weight IMO. Your pup could def afford to lose 5 or so lbs, easy. Again these are all opinions, if you want him to ahve more energy though, cut his food down atleast 3/4cup a day and keep doing what your doing. He will come around, unless theres something wrong. Also, weight just hurts their hips more also. |

Some dogs are just lower energy than others. The 18 month old boy I adopted just over 3 weeks ago seems to fall into that category too - he too tires out quicker than my other two and lags behind when I've tried to take him for bike rides. I've learned he just doesn't enjoy them, at least not at this point in time. He does however enjoy fetch and catching balls high in the air,as well as regular walks so I still find ways to give him good exercise. I can feel his ribs easily so I know he's not overweight. Perhaps he just needs to build up some endurance, or is simply in the "low energy" category. It's a new thing for me too, since my other pit mix has never-ending energy, enjoys bike rides and runs like her tail's on fire.

Your pup is overweight and your adult could stand to loose a couple. My girl shows a little spine and ribs, but she's very toned and healthy vs underweight. 4 cups a day bloody hell that's a lot! Most who feed their pit bulls kibble, usually don't surpass 2 - 2.5 cups a day. I have a great feeling your definition of "thin" is far from the actual truth. These dogs are not heavy set figures (far from it), the average Joe however, believes the very opposite. If they're not use to regular exercise, then they suddenly blow off a good amount of steam, I wouldn't be surprised either if they tired out that easily, with the addition of the extra pounds they're carrying also.
Your pup is still growing, so be careful to not overstress his physical condition (which is why you should begin to now take the extra pounds off) along with, the exercises that you are asking him to do. Just keep things fun for him until he reaches maturity and get his weight under control. |

As far as your 9 year old, I personally don't find the weight objectionable, the dog still has tuck. Obviously not show condition, he is a pet, but does not look bad for his age. Everybody has a different opinion on weights and I think sometimes its hard to judge by pics. |
