At the least the people at the shelter could have gotten somewhat close by calling it a 'dalmation mix' rather than a cattle dog.. I just don't see that at all.

Well, if the shelter does not have a ped on the dog or anything all they can do is guess. You can't blame them for not knowing exactly what the dog is. Some dogs are harder to tell the breeds on than others when you don't know what they really are it's not like they come in with an ID. We have had a few dogs that were hard to tell the mix of at my shelter, so this is coming from a shelter worker's point of view and experience.

You cannot just say a dog is this or that by looking at it, you have to make some kind of guess though to list them on websites. But some dogs are just obvious what they are, but there are mixes we all get stumped on and I am pretty good at guessing dog breeds..the smaller ones are harder for me though lol. But yeah, some shelters are dog dumb period.

She has the eyes, ears and face of an Australian shepherd. The eyes are definitely Aussie. The ears have merle in addition to the spots. I defiantly see the dalmatian in her face as well now that you mention it -- not that I've ever seen a dalmatian in person.

Where I live, people would never argue with you if your said that dog was a cow dog. Of course cattle dog isn't a breed, it's a lifestyle a dog leads. I tell my pits, "load-up cow dogs."

She's not pure bred anything, -- obviously -- but he has the look of a working dog.

I don't think she is mixed with Aussie at all. A Catahoula is a herding dog as well.

Well the only important this is that this dog in particular finds a home. Regardless of what she is.

I had no idea this thread would turn into trying to figure out what the breed is. It was never intended to be that.

Hotchkiss; how do you see Australian Sheperd in this dog?. The ears don't look like a Australian Sheperds to me. Also, how is the 'Cattle dog' not a breed. As far as I know, it is. Cept some people label them 'Red/blue Heelers' depending on there color. One last thing, I am shocked they call this dog a Cattle dog x. This dog does look like a Dalmation mix to me or a poorly bred purebred one.

Tahlz: They aren't calling her a Cattle Dog mix. Just a cattle dog.

Krista: I know you didn't. You know how threads are. They sometimes go in different directions than you originally attended. No Biggie

O. That's even worse. Sad thing is, some people will think she is a Purebred cattle dog. How does some one mix up a cattle dog with a Dalmation!?. They look completely differen. Christ.

I am wrong, evidently Australian Cattle Dog is a breed.

Like you said, we just call them Heelers here in the States. I was thinking this dogs looks like an Australian Shepherd because of the eyes -- typically blue -- and the merle ears. Shepherds have a touch of perk, they can move them a little. I was under the impression that Dalmatians have ears like labs.

Never mind, that dog looks like a dalmatian to me too.

I just hope her new owners realize that they didn't just adopt a purebred Cattle dog because I just found out she was adopted a little bit ago.

She looks Pointer or some type of bird dog mix more so than Dalmatian. We had a Dal, Jake. Great dog. They are just too high energy for me and it is hard to find a good breeder that breed correct sound tempered dogs.

Just a pet peeve a mine as many posters on this thread spelled it wrong. 3 A's, never an O in Dalmatian! Kinda like when someone spells pit with two t's!

I love Dals which is why I think she stood out to me. But I definately wouldn't consider one until my daughter is a teen. And by then I may just not have the energy I do now. So the Dal is on my list of dogs I'd love to own but probably never will

I think a dals energy is overrated in a sense. They arent a bundle of energy like a young pit, more like they are constantly trotting around on the go all day, regardless if you run them heavy for a while or not. And they're constantly up your butt! At least this is how my dal and his family members were. To be honest I didn't think he was super energetic as far as most dogs go and he was very obedient with limited training. Then again I think he came from half decent dogs, not sure how mill dogs would act. You should keep considering one

Dalmatians commonly have blue eyes.

That dog looks nothing like a catahoula.

I can see where a shelter would get cattle dog, based on the ear colouring and how small the spots are.
