I figured I asked here, in addition to doing my own research, since I know there are a lot of people on here that fancy other breeds as well. We lost our old dog on Tuesday so we are down to one dog, an intact male GSD. We are looking into getting a new dog sometime in the next couple of months. Because of our current resident, we are looking for a a breeder who's contract does not prevent spaying (or rescue OK with an intact dog). My aunt and uncle would be adopting/purchasing the dog and have had two ACDs. Entlebuchers are a breed we are also considering. So, here's the wishlist, so let me know if you know of any good rescues/breeders:
1) OFA/PRCD/BAER (for ACDs) testing on both sire and dame if from a breeder 2) Working dog or sporting titles (no parents with solely confirmation titles) if from a breeder 3) Willing to travel anywhere in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, Mass. We currently like Annie's description, but we won't be ready until early November for a dog, so who knows if she'll be available: http://www.acdra.org/our-foster-dogs/ |

Thank you! We've been Cattle Dog free for 5 years, but we are suckers for punishment, and so the search began! Never looked into the Entlebucher. Seems like a smaller version of the BMD. Which was a breed we were interested in before we became bully addicts and got Ike and then the rest of the dogs. I even tried to adopt a Bernese mix from a rescue, but he was a man biter and yeah, no thanks. Now I'm glad I didn't find a stable one because I think I wouldn't do so well with the grooming needs. The ones I have seen are a bit shaggy and seem to like rolling in the mud a lot. |

EMD and BMDs are nothing alike. EMDs are very much herding/stock dogs that are wary of strangers and need a job. I'd say they're more like GSMDs, except more neurotic. This is just from my personal experience with the two I know, so who knows if that's actually the case for the rest of the population.

Allegedly,
Temperament: As with all large, active working dogs, this breed should be well socialized early in life with other dogs and people, and be provided with regular activity and training. Temperament of individual dogs may vary, the Standard says that the breed is "Good-natured and devoted towards people familiar to him, slightly suspicious of strangers." which is the impression I got on a BMD's temperament when I was thinking about one. Maybe the ones you know are nutty lol. |

Allegedly, I'm sure if they were trained properly they'd be less fruity. |

Thanks everyone!
Cliff - I know. That listing is horribly done. MJ - I can't wait until she's big enough to have some real fun with. Puppies are cute, but not my thing. It's everyone else that wants a puppy! LL - I haven't meant an Entlebucher yet, but I love what I have read. If this falls through, we will be taking a closer look at them ![]() Monkeys - I actually was interested in getting a Border Collie, but no go with the family members. They think BCs are too neurotic and not 'sturdy' enough. LOL Argument was futile. At least we did not end up with the Corgi that my aunt wanted. That is not my cup of tea! Still waiting to hear back. We are all getting antsy and starting to pick out names. I like Mayhem (May for short), Anarchy (Annie for short) and Chaos (Kay for short). |

If that's for the entlebucher, I wouldn't call them large dogs other than their attitudes. They're probably 14-16in at most in height, at least for the girls. ---------- Post added at 05:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:57 PM ---------- Thanks everyone! ![]() |

I grew up with ACD dogs on my parents farm.. they are GREAT working dogs but idk how they would be as pets.. they need a job and without one they go crazy.. We have an ACD border collie cross named willow and she was by far the past cattle dog i have ever saw. She could unload bulls from a 53 foot bull wagon like it was nothing!!

just curious ... how comes u didnt want the dog to be fixed? I had to read that twice before I got it. Some rescues won't adopt to a person who has another dog that is intact. Tiff does. Some breeders don't want their pups s/n until a certain age (maturity) for health reasons or because the pup might be a show/work/breeding to continue the line prospect. Since I believe Tiff has an intact dog and would want this one spayed as soon as possible, it could be a problem with certain breeders. Because there is an intact dog around, it could be a problem with certain rescues. |
