Sandi has a big cushion on the couch & will start off curled up with a bit of contact but slowly ends up on your lap, after every subtle shift she will check your reaction, settle for a few minutes & then sneak a bit more. My partner & I vie to be the leanee because once the dog is in situ she is the perfect excuse to stay couch bound & get others to do our bidding.
The dog also has a padded bench seat in the front window of my shop, if a customer sits down she will haul herself up, making a huge fuss of climbing 18 inches & sit beside them with no contact. Very slowly she starts to lean & if no reaction is forthcoming she will rest her whole body weight against them. I crack up watching a customer trying to read the paper or use a lap top with one arm whilst trying to stay upright against her weight. Priceless.

leaning on you can be a sign of dominance aggression
Particularly if they react when you try to move rather than snuffle, grunt & get out the way.

It doesn't seem like dominance when Pooh does it. Actually it seems like the opposite. If someone else in the house gets mad at him, he comes and sits on my feet leans up against my legs, like "gramma save me".

Yes, Jayda does. IT'S SO ANNOYING. I'm trying to stand there and she comes over and is like 'Gimme attention!' and leans on me/steps on my feet.

Oh, my dog is not aggressive towards me at all lol. Never has been. Just a bit unruly, but I don't really care since she's not a working dog. She does 99% of what I tell her, just not recall... If I tell her to go away, she'll go away.

I wouldnt really say dominance aggression manifests itself as actual aggression per say.Its just the dog trying to get higher up than you.My dog Chloe was extremly dominant aggressive, but ,no,she was never physically aggressive to me.She just thought she was the boss of me.She would stand on me or step on my feet demanding attention and at the time I didnt realize what she was up to untill it got just ridiculous, bassically the dog was running the house.I started N.I.L.I.F with her and it was an immediate turn around. Its good that you say she goes away when you tell her to,I'm just speaking as someone whose dealt with the same thing. It is something you want to keep under control before it gets out of control.

Harleys is the opposite also. He leans so much into you that if you move he will fall on the floor (happens alot because his weight pushes you so when you step back he falls) and he always rolls belly up and just lays there (and a lot of people continue lovin on him because they feel bad after dumping him on the floor.. I not longer do, as I know he now does it to keep people lovin on him longer, I usually just laugh and tell him to get up but he will usually just stay on the floor until I walk away, but he does know now that if he can get the right unsuspecting person to dump him they will pet him twice as long as they originally would if they didnt make him fall, and the pittyful face he gives from the floor doesnt help matters lol)

Sandi used to nip my heels if i walked away from her which i found out was her way of telling me that she had not given me permission to leave. I always make sure I have the final say in anything she does at home, like i posted she can be on the couch but only with permission & any leaning or cuddling is done incrementally, she check at every stage that I'm not reacting which I take to be a good sign.
Whats N.I.L.I.F?

Thank you. Got that pretty much nailed before I knew the name of it.

The pups latest attention grabber is to whack me with the knotty end of her pull rope. She has figured out that a good whack with the knot will get a reaction every time, she goes for the groin. Maybe she has read about Nilif & is trying to undermine it or maybe she just has a good sense of humour

Reno no Zena yes.Shes like the girl friend you had when you were 16.

If I take the dogs in my work truck with the bench seat she rides bitch to the point of having to put your arm around her to shift while she leans so hard against me that she has to lift a paw and put it on my leg. When we take one of the Blazers we rotate who gets the front seat if she gets the back seat she puts her front feet on the console and puts her head by my bluetooth and keeps knocking it out.

when I sit on the couch or go to bed some part of her needs to be touching me.Some time its really annoying.

Cupcake is a chronic leaner. She'll hop up in the recliner with me and if she want's attention she'll sit in the recliner like a person, butt flat, leg's straight out and she'll lean on me and we'll be shoulder to shoulder and she'll put her head on my chest.
it's quite adorable but it get's annoying when I'm trying to read CC on the TV since I'm deaf. If I cannot read the CC I miss the most important parts of the movie or show typically and its during those times ironically she'll do this.

Deeohgee's my biggest leaner. She'll seriously pin Raven in a corner leaning on her hoping she'll touch her ''special spot". It's no doubt the thing she gets in trouble most for.
Achilles is a perv,.. he does this to Powder only he doesn't lean on him. Instead he'll stand just in front of Powder (while he's laying down) so that his packages are right in front of him. Sometimes Powder will inspect the package but most of the time he just grunts and / or goes to sleep. While Achilles huffs and walks away looking depressed.

It is so funny to read that other dogs do this. D Blue thinks she is a lap dog. Then when she gets up there, she leans really really hard backwards and it is hard to breathe! And when she is on the floor she has to sit on feet. I know that has to be lumpy, I cannot understand why!

My Rottie, Harley leans against my legs most of the time. Occasionally if she can't get right in front of me while I'm sitting on the sofa, she will get as close as she can and then hitch her front leg up on the front of the sofa, likes she's leaning on a bar. Pretty comical.

Jake only leans on me if he is trying tick Harley off, otherwise he's dad's boy and like to hang out with him.
