Do you think dogs can feel sad or depressed because you do?

Not sure if they feel the same emotions we do but they definitely "feel". My home is very blue at the moment due to family illness so my partner & I are not our normal perky selves & Sandi is noticeably subdued & displaying new behaviour. They are certainly tuned in.

Dogs can definitely pick up on our emotions I think... they can tell when we are mad, sad or happy.

I know Mollie could tell when I was sad after my sister was killed... she wouldn't leave my side for 3 months. She may have not known "what" was wrong, but she definitely know "something" was wrong. I think they can sense the vibes we put off, whether we intend for them to or not. So yes, I think they know when we are sad. I also think they can help those feelings go from sad, to happy, just with their presence.

That's interesting, Sandi is very clingy at the moment, even to the point of sitting out side the bathroom or toilet until I come out. This is a new trait, she is like a little shadow.

o yes, I believe this. Cept my two don't get mopey, they try and cheer me up. I am the one who gets upset/depressed when they do. It's quite annoying.

Peanut has been sleeping a lot (which i am sure has to do with being tired from the weekend) but even my parents have said Peanut doesn't look like himself the last day or so. This is a process I have had to go thru before but it never gets easier. This is Peanut's second time going thru it with me he was great for me the first time so I am sure he will be the best little cheer up guy but it takes me a while to get thru this process I am just dumbfounded that it is starting so early this time.

it does make me feel better that you guys do think that dogs can pick up on our emotions because i do think Peanut is going thru this process with me. i just feel bad because i hate seeing him mopy.

I hope things get better. both of my dogs know when my mood changes whether its good or bad. My one even licks the tears off my face and puts her head on my shoulder.

omg i haven't thought of it that way. i think i just need to focus on the positive for Peanut. it really isn't the end of the world and i do have it better then some military wives but its just the time factor that has me down. i need to be positive for Peanut he is proabably really sad seeing me sad and he doesn't know why i am sad and why he hasn't been able to cheer me up.

i dont think that they necessarily feel the same emotions that you do but i most definitely believe that they always know which way the wind blows so to speak

Dogs are kings of understanding facial expressions and body language, both give us away very easily as to what we are feeling... they know what we feel and try to empathize as much as possible. I also believe that dogs can feel our energy and that it affects them in one way or another.

As for if they can feel sad or depressed... sure they can. If anyone wants to argue that point, they should go to a shelter- not many dogs are happy being there.

Nope. It's just us anthropormophizing our pets. We see what we wanna see. My dog is like JoeBingo's dog also when it comes to his moods.

I know it is hard and I wish there was something I could say to make it better. Predeployment is ALWAYS a bitch. Peanut understands when you are not you, and he empathizes. But its just because he loves you

I respectfully say bull shit hahaha
My dogs have always been more tender and cuddly when I need it. I think some people, men in particular, do not see emotions in animals for the same reason they cant figure out what they said 5 minutes ago to piss their wife off, they arent paying attention.
