Default What do you call your dog
For anyone who doesn't have a pure bred dog, when someone asks what type of dog do you say you have? My pup didn't come with papers and I have no idea what the parents histories are so I'm hesitant to say "pit bull" when people ask. I also don't particularly care what breed he is as long as he's good. So I'm just curious what others say when asked the question, "What kind of dog is that?" I might just start telling people he's a good dog or maybe a white dog when they ask.

Mutt works for me.

I guess I could also start saying he's some rare breed of pig because when he's happy he snorts like a little piggy.

Depends on who Im talking to.. people who Ive somewhat informed I will just refer to him as a 'pit bull' as in the media version which refers to any breed that looks like such. People who comment on him to me while we were out saying things like "nice pit" or "is he a pit?" Ill typically say "hes not" or "no" and by then we have passed so theres no need for further answer. But I also wonder this same thing a lot. I really have no idea what the most accuate thing to call him is but I typically refer to him as a bully mix if Im in a situation where a simple yes/no wont be enough.

Yeah I call her a mix too. I couldnt give two hoots what they think of it in all honesty. Shes well loved and cared for by the people that matter and shes happy.

However, for those that DO appreicate the breed, I do tend to explain they shouldnt approach her quickly or reach out to her. Shes still very nervous about men when we are out. Its something we are working on, but I must say, the people I have met have been really helpful and will just not look at her and they will talk to me from a short distance to help make her comfortable. I have been quite lucky and am UBER careful to keep her on the lead if I notice people around.

I have had a few fellow dog-walkers being REALLY helpful too, if their dogs are used to other dogs, they will be very good about allowing Niki to approach and play-bow with their dogs (of course again, shes on lead), at the same time doing their best to make her comfortable.

Actually, she has one play-friend called Mia, a beautiful white husky thats roughly her age. Mia lives in a house adjoining the park, if the park is empty of ANYONE this is the cue to let Niki and Mia run the length of the garden chasing each other for about 20 minutes having an absolute ball of a time! Niki on the park side, Mia on the garden side.

In closing (sorry, I tend to ramble), the understanding people allow me to help socialise her a bit at a time....although we still have a long way to go.

I call mine what they are.
If they are purebred and I know it I call them their breed. If they are of mixed heritage and I know what the mix is I say "American Pit Bull Terrier-Lab mix" and if I have no clue I say "Some kinda mutt". If I have a mutt that I am not sure about but i strongly suspect something i will say "A mutt, but I think there's some lab in there", for example.

I call her a terrier mix because her mom was a Terrier. However I do not know her exact breed mix. Sometimes I just say she is a mutt depening on whois asking. Her adoption papers had her listed as a specific mix so all her records have her listed as what her adoption papers say. Most of the time I say Terrier mix, mix breed, or mutt.

With Kainai I just say she is a ''mixed breed''. She appears to be a smooth coated collie x german shepherd.

For my dogs that don't have paperwork, I just tell it like it is. Tank and Arez... I know some of their ancestry, which is Clouse/Tudor (Mayfield) X Hemphill/Wilder but some is unknown. For Roxy I say she's a rescue but we THINK she is a Patterdale. For Deeohgee, I tell them that she was surredered to rescue from a family that purchased her as an Am Staff, but I don't know for sure. For CoCo I say she's a rescue but due to her looks and color, she's probably an Am Staff possibley verging on American Bully but I don't really know for sure.
