The Coppinger's book, "Dogs - A Startling New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior and Evolution", addresses a lot of this to a level you don't see written about much.

Not an easy read.

Not for furmommies.

Carla
I just read a book review on that book. Looks very interesting. I noticed it talked about how dogs aren't like wolves, which, that in itself seems to be controversial in the dog world. Anyway, looks really good. And, thank for all the answers... The Paris Hilton thing is ridiculous!!

UMMM. I let Judge lay on my dining room table. I also paint his and Red's toenails. BUT they eat dog food, are treated like dogs and I have NO problems crating them to leave etc. No dog sitter just to go to the store etc.

I do find that I baby Red a lot and even Judge more than I do Hobie. Hobie is treated much more like a dog cause he always has been. IDK. I definitely don't consider myself a fur mommy or anything of the sort. lol lol

I find myself torn between 2 worlds LOL. I baby talk some, never dress them up though. They are allowed on the furniture. At least one of them sleeps with us at night.
I do NOT generally refer to them as kids.
I do say "tell Daddy you want to go out"
But I call him Daddy 99% of the time anyway.
They DO get SOME human food.
They know what an outside chainspot is in good weather and SOME of my APBTs do live on a chainspot.
I DO cootchie-coo puppies, tuck my kittens in bed, call Sox a worthless Jughead and kiss him on top of the head.
But at the end of the day, when all is said and done, I know ALL my dogs are genetically hardwired to be DA, and that it is my responsibility to keep them safe from the public at large and all the loose animals in the neighborhood safe from them.
I enjoy knowing their bloodlines and tracing them back for years and years. I try to be all about the so called "gamebred" APBT.
I know humans are to come first and foremost in importance.
I would defend my dogs with ALL my heart and soul. But my family needs me so I doubt I would jump in front of a bullet. I would be tempted but my children need their Mom alive.
If I had no children or husband, it could be different I suppose.
All in all, I don't think I am a furmommy, just a sap maybe. LOL.

Yeah, it is....but interesting to think about -- not sure I agree with all of it, but parts I do..

The discussion about service dogs, pets and "behavioral conformation" are really good...

That's so funny when people and even National Geographic does it, but say that dogs are decended from wolves. Darwin actually found that dogs are cousins of, not decendants of wolves. They are not the same, yet similar.
