Default Boating with your dog
Anyone here take your dogs on boats with you? I own a sailboat that I take out frequently, and am wondering if anyone has experience taking pits on the water.

I would, of course, be using a life jacket & harness and probably leash her to where she can't go off the side. Just wondering more about tolerance.

Mine LOVE it. LOVE IT. However, I had one decide to jump in at a less than ideal time. I got very, very wet.

It's harder to pull a dog into a boat than you might think.

From what I can tell, the air is more full of great smells on the water than on anywhere else on earth...

I take my dog out on the catamaran and in canoes. She doesn't fit in the kayak with me but the last foster pup loved sitting between my knees in the kayak. I've always had really positive experiences with dogs and boats, good idea to play it safe with a life jacket, especially if you're going to be on a river/ocean.

Cooper loves it. Max, my Welsh corgi, does not. He spends the entire time defending us against any and all waves. He turns into a raging maniac, and no one has fun.

Yes, Max and I can tell you it is more difficult than you would think to pull a dog out of the water and back into the boat.

Cooper comes; Max stays home!

I've taken Jack out on a jet ski a few times. He sits tight in front of me. Isaac is better suited to jet-ski travel, though. lol.

We live on the Gulf of Mexico & have a 19 ft. bowrider. Our dogs absolutely LOVE the water & sit at the front of the boat. Too much ingestion of saltwater can lead to throwing up though.

my dog Rusty before the two I have now .was awesome in a canoe.never wore a life vest and knew how to get back in with out much fuss.I used to use him to duck hunt as a pitrevier.

The dogs I have now not so much Reno will kick it in the boat ,Zena has to jump out of the canoe to chase birds. Then Reno follows.Get life vests with the strongest straps you can find.If you can find one with a hand hold on the back even better. You probably will find out like I did with these two that dragging them back in is easier if you can grab the vest to help you get them back in.Sit on the ground with dog laying at your side and try and lift them up a foot or so over your leg level and you will see what i mean.

We took Chansey white water rafting once! Had her life jacket on because of the rough water, of course. Funny that when Chansey and I fell out of the duckie when we hit a rock.. Chansey was the one my fiance pulled into the duckie first! It was a neat trip.. we rode up to the put-in in a van with a bunch of other people, and everyone on the river that day was calling out to Chansey.. dunno how they all knew her name, either! lol

All four of mine absolutely love it. I take them at least twice a week to various sand bars and islands where they can run without being around other dogs or people.

Of course, EB's don't swim well so only two at a time so I can leash them up in the boat and short trips only. Haven't found a life jacket yet that will fit AND float an EB.
