My 3 yr. old GSD still squats to pee 90% of the time. He is nothing but ALL boy, he doesn't have to lift his leg to prove that.

You don't want that. Then he'll stop to piss on everything.

It's not a big deal, really. Some dogs don't ever lift their legs to pee. My hound has never lifted his leg to pee...

The GSD I used to have didn't lift his leg to mark, unless we were out for a walk and another dog had "tagged" the tree/pole/etc first. He wouldn't do it at a show, though, unless another dog was in sight, strangely enough.

My brothers intact male squats to pee over other dogs pee. My neutered male sometimes lifts a leg and sometimes squats. I used to get all bent about it like somehow squatting made my dog seem wussy, but now I just don't care. As long as the pee is outside they can do it any way they want!!!

My boy was a squatter 100% of the time up until about a month or two ago (he's 1 1/2) now he still squats most of the time but occassionally while squatting he will also lift a leg.

I prefer the squatting actually. Its also turned into a great conversation started for people unsure about him. They laugh that a male squats and ask about him. I had the work several times in getting unsure people to pet him and listen a bit about the breed

Hoss would squat and he would lift his leg, depending on if he was actually urinating, or if he was marking. He always lifted his leg to mark.

Marsha always lifts her leg to pee. Always.

Hell, I've had females that would lift their leg to pee and males that squatted their whole life. Some just don't. Nothing to worry about.

They don't have to be male to do that. Liberty is the queen of the 'piss and walk', which is her saying "this is mine, and this is mine, and this is mine... hmmm, this smells like another dog, oh well, it's mine now" . She's a dominant gal, and she's been spayed for 8.5 years. She doesn't lift her leg, but I can't walk 1 stupid block without stopping 5 or 6 times lol.

I've always wondered about this. Do neutered males still attempt to "mark" anything? When we take Peyton for a walk, he pees at least 4-5 times, more if its a really long walk. Is he marking? Or just...peeing.

He has never once lifted his leg, and has been neutered since 8wks. He still squats haha.

neither of my boys really lift their leg...they both stretch out as much as they can then kinda tip a toe up off the ground...so they half lift and they stretch

neutered has nothing to do with it, its their way of communicating like lilly, "this is mine, that is mine, oh mine too.. OH HELL NO HE MARKED MY LAST SPOT?" *pee pee peee* lol

My FEMALE Doberman (dominant bitch) used to squat AND lift her leg at the same time trying to mark things when she peed.

Grimm doesn't "hike" his leg. He just lifts it straight up in the air and does a squat/hike. Grimm doesn't mark even when we take him out for a walk. He couldn't care less about other dogs.

With Gidget, you'd think her rear end was glued to the ground.

We were told that Dylan is two and a half years old and he still squats to pee. My boyfriend said once he was walking him and he did mark a tree, but I've never seen it happen, so who knows, lol.

I don't mind that he squats.

Yup. Ike is neutered and I think he lifts his leg to mark, squats to just pee. I swear he is going to hurt himself on walks. He really squeezes every last drop out to mark "his" telephone poles, bushes and fence posts. I'm waiting for him to strain a muscle squeezing drops out of the empty tank, lol.

I wonder if he feels the need to mark other things too, besides being outside. Like the other night when I stayed the night over my mom's house in my old room, he peed on my bed. Little shithead. lol. Even though he goes over there pretty frequently. *sigh*

LOL Southern! Red and Judge are the same way, Judge is on a mission to walk and Red is trying to mark everything she can.

Just because a dog lifts their leg to pee does NOT mean that they will mark. Red a spayed female lifts her leg to mark EVERYTHING and she lifts her leg to pee.
