Default Sad to say
Both of my pits got out a couple weeks ago when the lawn people were mowing my yard. Well animal control picked them up and deemed them dangeroug dogs. I went to court and the dog catcher admitted that they hadn't bitten or atacked anyone but were considered aggressive and are now going to be put down. I am sad but not much else that I can do about it at this time.

Well it's happening. The dog catcher made my dogs sound like they were so dangerous and aggressive it was completely ridiculous. I live in a really small town in TX and all the city employess are friends and on the good ol boy system. My neighbors who also own a pit told me when I moved in that I needed to be careful because the county is all about putting pits down here and would take every chance to put them down that they could. Plus a lot of the neighbors here just plain don't like pits either. There is more to the story but it would take a long time to type it all out and explain it all.

you can take it to court. If there's no record of a bite, they can't hold him as a dangerous dog.

Went to court yesterday. I don't know if you read youKnow2 but the lawn care people let them out... The judge didn't even listen to my side, he just waited for me to be done talking and then gave his verdict. Yes, I could appeal it but I don't have the money for the lawyer nor can I take the time off of work. Realisticly, it's just a shitty situation that is kind of out of my hands.

Uh, why the hell were your dogs out when you knew the lawn people would be there?

My last house I had lawn care people. And my goddamn dogs were inside when the lawn guys pulled up to my house, usually before that.

And if I had been stupid enough to leave them out, and they let them out, it'd be my goddamn fault, even though I'd still give those lawn bastards hell.

You were warned that where you live is not friendly to your dogs. That should have been enough to take every precaution to prevent something like this from ever happening. I don't care if my dog is leaking ass piss everywhere and needs to go outside, I wouldn't let them out if some random person was mowing my lawn, or doing anything that required my gate to be open.

I have all my gates padlocked when I'm gone. My dogs are never out when I'm not home.
Can you get in touch with a newspaper? I'd put up a HUGE stink about this...

poor dogs, I have a padlock aswell on my gate. nothing is coming in and nothing is going out. hell, if one of my dogs is even outside when the bug lady comes she wont go back there until they are contained otherwise she leaves a note and she will come back another time. I never had anyone (who sprayed or did house repairs) EVER come in until my animals were put up.

When my crazy neighbor shot my dog the SPCA were very help[full in advocating for him. That does suck ass.Un like some people here i understand that sometimes things happen even though we try as hard as we can to keep them safe sometimes they get out and bad things happen.Don't give up Get in the news paper don't be afraid to drop names.( local government idiots)

Yeah, i agree. If your dogs don't have a bite history, do whatever it takes to try to overturn the ruling, even if that means getting the media involved.

Lol i can read not as good as some folks but in none of your post do you mention that the lawn people let them out, all you said was "THEY" got out not they "LET" them out. If you mabe clarify it the judge would of heard you and not think you are a irresponsible person.

Appeal the ruling yourself so they have to hold the dogs and not euth them. After that, start making phone calls. See if you can get a lawyer on a payment plan or as a volunteer. Ask rescues if they know anyone who can help with court. Go to the news, both print and television. Set up a facebook page and post the emails of the city officials so people can send letters to them on your behalf. Ask people in rescue and online to donate money to cover legal fees. They can send donations directly to the lawyer you hire.

Or you can cry, complain and then let your dogs die because you didn't have them contained in crates in your house.

Good idea MJJean! I was just going to mention a lot of local rescues and shelters USUALLY have a lawyer somewhere in there connections...at least anyone Ive worked with. It can be a simple craigslist ad even to get someone to point you in the right direction for people to contact in your area, Ive done it not for your situation. But As far as my understanding goes, they cannot just put a dog down unless there is just cause and if there is no dog bite report or some brutal mauling...Unless you have a history of reports on these dogs in the past? Or If they are "banned" in your area.

Even if the OP has a history of reports he can get help appealing the ruling since the dogs didn't do anything and ask the court to release them to a rescue.

My friends dog ran a kid over, literally, while chasing a ball. AC was called. They told him he HAD to sign the dog over as it were now considered vicious. The dog was to be euthed the following Monday. I told him to call a lawyer as a dog is not deemed vicious unless it actually attacks and this was a simple accident. His GF called her divorce lawyer and talked about it. The lawyer is a dog lover and took the case for free. He simply told the city they were acting outside the law as the dog didn't attack, asked for the paperwork to be sent to his office, threatened a lawsuit and the dog was released back to my friend. Yes, you can fight city hall.

I'm sad to hear about your dogs.
But there are two solutions to this situation. 1. Fight with everything you have to get your dogs back or 2. Let them be put down.
I would appeal the decision and keep appealing until I got my dog back if in fact the dog hadn't bit anyone and was never a danger to anyone.
YOU are the only person that cares what happens to your dogs. Don't give up on them please....

Did they deem them dangerous by conducting a temperament test? If not, demand one in appeal. Come ready with witnesses who can attest to their proper and social temperament.

This guy doesn't care to get the dogs back. If he did, he would have been on here as soon as it happened asking for advice on how to save his dogs.

Instead he comes on somewhat after the fact and announces his dogs are to be killed and it's "out of his hands".

It is very sad, and I hope I am wrong about the OP. Some people handle tragedy differently than do others. Some people just don't have it in them to fight. I hope that's the case and not that he just plain doesn't really care enough to fight.
