Default Bone or no bone???
Hello
So I bought bartender a bone tonight from our local feed store. Before I knew it in a matter of an hour the whole thing was almost gone. I took it away worried he had eaten too much. I had never seen a dog eat one that fast. It was a beef bone that is supposed to be safer for them because it does not split into splinters. My question is do you feed your dog bones? If so should I limit his chewing time? I am worried he wont be able to digest it. I know this might be a stupid question, but I was just curious.

P.S. One more question, I did switch him from Pedigree which his previous owners fed him to Diamond food, good choice?

Thanks all!

I don't give big femur bones (if that is the kind of bone you are talking about) because Mater used to get the runs from them. Now if it was a raw bone then yes it can cause constipation.

It depends on which Diamond food you switched to. I don't like their regular line but their Naturals line is decent for the price.

I would still be feeding that if Mater wasn't allergic to grains and chicken.

Only real problem I have seen is the runs. HAHA I can't spell diarrehea. DID I GET IT RIGHT? haha
I know my dogs DEMOLISH ANYTHING I GIVE THEM.
I gave my boy a huge cow elbow, and he broke it into two peices ate one, and hasnt touched the other half yet. He makes a MESS with it too.

Mine destroy bones. A cow femur is annihilated by my 3 within an hour.

However, beef knuckles tend to last longer.

I stick to Nylabones, with cow bones as a change for the dogs.

Rawhide expands when wet. Inside a dog it can expand and then wrap around the stomach or intestines and cause blockages. A lot of people still give rawhide, but I don't think its worth the risk.

Most raw feeders give their dogs bones as part of their diet. So, I'm gonna saw that an uncooked and sturdy bone is fine.

I only give raw bones. I don't give rawhide either.

Watch your dog carefully with weight bearing bones (like femur) of large animals like cattle. These bones are more dense because they have to support a thousand pounds + of weight. Many raw feeders call them wreck bones because they are really good at slab fracturing teeth.

Thanks for that info monkey. I didn't even think about that. Dozers teeth usually just slide off the big bone like he is stripping it, I think that's why he makes such a mess.

Smoked bones = big no no.

And as far as diarrhea goes from regular bones, that's generally due to the richness of the marrow in the bone. Many dogs can't handle it.

Our dogs are raw-fed, and they get bones with their meal every night, but they're bones from chicken quarters so it's a little different than marrow in a beef bone.

I also feed raw bones and "wreck bones" only once in awhile as monkey says they can fracture teeth especially the vigorous chewers.
X2 Smoked or cooked bones definite no no

^^^ Yes, Debo slab-fractured one of his back teeth a while back. Luckily, it was clean but shallow, so nothing has needed to be done to it up to this point. I actually don't know if it was a bone or a bowling ball he used to chew on. Now, when I give him cow femurs or the like, he chews on it for a bit & then gets bored of it & it lays around until I toss it. But many dogs would continue to just gnaw it for fun, and that can cause a lot of wear on the teeth, or breaking of teeth.

Rawhide is pretty bad news from what people have said, but I have never lost a dog from it. I HAVE lost a dog from choking on a bone. Now I'm super cautious.

I don't give rawhides, mostly because they leave a nasty gooey mess on the floor, that I inevitably step on. Yuck.

Google the Galileo bones... get the Souper size. They are pricey, but well worth the $$. Trust me on this. I've had mine for 3 years, and Mollie and Bella both chew on it. It cost $25, but for 3 years use... even if they destroy it tonight, it's been worth what I spent on it.

I get the rawhide wrapped ones. Never interferes with their systems and there's not much rawhide along with them. But they never last more than an hour, I'm used to that by now
