I just had the most unbelievable vet visit EVER!

I've been to this vet before and never had problems, and they're VERY reasonably priced so I decided that would be Moto's vet. Well, I have officially changed my mind!

Moto and I show up early for our appointment so we can fill out paperwork and so we can relax and enjoy the experience so he doesn't become one of those dogs that's terrified of the vet. So we're hangin out in the lobby, playin with our chew toy, practicing how to use the scale, viewing other dogs politely, and visiting with the front office staff who are very nice and think he's very cute...it was going very well.

Then the vet calls us back and here's how it went:

*tech sets Moto on baby scale*
Vet- "So you're here for vaccinations?"
Me- "No, just dewormer...he's not due for vaccinations until Tuesday, so we'll come back next week"
V- "When was he last vaccinated?"
M- "At 7 weeks"
V- "Oh then we HAVE to do him today. Vac.'s have to be done every 3 weeks so he is already over due!"
M- "I thought they were due every 4 weeks? Vac's make me nervous anyway so I'd rather not throw it on him too soon"
V- "Why? What have you heard?"
M- "I've heard they can cut the lifespan of a dog, they're unnecessary when a dog already has immunity that's why you can do titer testing, there's speculation rabies can intensify they're hearing"
V- "HAHAHA Don't believe everything you read on the internet. I know more about vaccines than anyone writing on the internet anyway. I'm a vet."

*Vet goes glances in Moto's ears w/o ottoscope*

M- "Oh! I almost forgot... a few days ago he had a lot of brown cerumen in his ears. They weren't inflamed and he hasn't been scratching, but it smelled bad. We had cleaned his ears out a few days prior with this stuff."

*I show vet the ear cleaning solution I bought Moto*

V- "There should NEVER be discharge in a dog's ears. That is ALWAYS infection!"

*Vet puts together ottoscope and takes a look in his ears*

M- "Do you think this could have caused it?"
V- "There's no discharge in his ears now."
M- "So the infection is gone?"
V- "You should NEVER EVER EVER touch a dogs ears. Never clean it. Now you've messed them up."
M- "What should I do when the discharge comes back??"
V- "Well, bring him in again. There's nothing I can do now, is there?"
M- "Sorry, I just don't want him to have an infection..."
V- "I swear!! You are one of the most over-the-top owners I've had in a long time!"
M- "I'm sorry...I just really love him and I don't want him to be sick."

*Vet rubs down Moto's legs and through his belly*
M- "Oh, and he's been having an issue with knuckling over... it's gettinga lot better now, but do you think we'll need to splint him?"
V- "Wait, what do you think is happening?"
M- "He's knuckling over? Like, his wrist is over his foot too far? I can't remember the technical term for it..."
V- "Lady, this puppy is not knuckling over. You only ever see that in giant breed dogs, not in some tiny pit bull"
M- "He's an american staffordshire. My breeder, the litter evaluator, and many dog people have told me he's knuckling over."
V- "Do you know what the definition of a breeder is?"
M- "What?"
V- "Someone with a male and female dog. Do you know what the definition of a vet is? Someone with 8 years of education."
M- "You know what, you don't need to do anything else with him. I'll pay for the exam, we're not dealing with you anymore."
V- "You don't need to pay for the exam, free of charge"


On the way out I heard him telling his tech's with a stupid voice that "She didn't like me awww"

I saw a tech in the parking lot and asked her if he was always that rude and she said that yeah, he has his attitudes, but to come see the other vet because she's nicer.

I'm NOT going back.

Dude, good for you for walking out!

What a complete and total idiot.

I encourage you to at least do a Yelp review, I always read them. Maybe it'll help someone else decide not to waste their time with that fool.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. That really sucks. That made me angry just reading that. Your vet is a PROFESSIONAL with a BUSINESS and if he wants to keep making a profit he better watch what he says before enough people complain and people stop going to him.

What a tool! I would have left as well. He may be a vet but you are the dog owner and your are HIS CLIENT!

Oh, I was just SO upset. When I get a lot of anger built up in me, I break to tears, so I was in the parking lot grinding my teeth and crying- thank god he didn't see me cry!

It took me a while to find my vet, but he's soooo good! You can ask him anything and if he's not sure he'll do some research or send you to someone who does know. Never makes you feel stupid...

Exactly. The 2 I work for now are not vets I would take my animals to. I'll give up my whopping 20% discount lol to go to my good vet.
Good vets are few and far between unfortunately. I've worked with 13+ vets at 3 different hospitals, and I've only found 2 of them that I'd actually take my dogs to.

You handled that well in my opinion. I can't say I would have. Sounds like he had an issue with talking to an educated "pit bull" owner. A lot of drs (of any sort) don't like patients telling them what's going on (THEY are the dr after all) and it sounds like that vet had that problem. You handled it well. Your puppy is what's improtant and that vet doesn't deserve your money or your puppys health being in his hands

Sometimes breeders know more than vets. My previous dog had a devastating illness. We spent over $3,000 in vet bills. Nobody could figure out what was wrong. A breeder told me it was, "Shar-Pei Fever." I told one of the vets, (he had several). The vet looked it up and found out it was a real illness. My dog was put on colchicine which cost about $10 bucks a month and everything was fine until the pup lost his mind years later.

Oh... the point of that was to say... Vets study a LOT of different conditions and animals in that eight years of education... (Actually, four of those years is for a Bachelors degree which may not have anything to do with diagnosing or treating animals)... Anyhow while vets may have a wealth of general knowledge, a GOOD

Any chance you could post the vets name or website or something? I kinda want to make sure I never go there accidentally. I might end up walking out in handcuffs facing assault charges. Seriously.

What sucks is that to begin with I really lack respect for non-specialized small animal...they're kinda like buying a smart phone where you get 90 half-ass features instead of a working phone. I have faith that there is one out there that can be of use though.

The problem is that the vet SUCKS, but his son is a friend and an EXCELLENT dog trainer, so I don't want to throw the business too far under the bus.

Same here. Although, my Shar-Pei was deathly afraid of Q-Tips. My vet told me it was essential that I clean his ears daily when he had something a while back. I suffered many bites because of that.

The same applies for going to the doctors for our own problems. I can't speak up for myself due to crushing social anxiety, but I could tell my last doctor was full of shit within the first thirty seconds of talking to him.

Recently I went to the doctor for leg pain. He told me I had a stress fracture and I needed an MRI. I told him it was too expensive and I did not. He insisted I did. He touted all his knowledge and experience. I got the MRI and wasted over $1000. It was totally clean. No fracture. His advice? Stop running and start cycling more... I told him day one, I wasn't running at all and the pain only happened while cycling.

That vet wasn't only rude, he's dangerous.
I've worked with medical "professionals" who are like that too.
The best are the ones who are always learning, reading, researching, asking questions; and never act like they know it all.

If I wasn't pre-vet, I probably wouldn't know the difference. I feel bad for all the people that he's treated like that and still got money from.

I'm high-tailing it back to the ear specialist that I spoke with awhile ago who also does general practice- he thought I was smart and gave me respect. Though he is going to cost a pretty penny more http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/frown.png and I'm unemployed so that's kinda a hard blow, but oh well.

Just like Doctors, a lot of vets hate it when you actually know what you are talking about. It's too bad they can't let their ego go and work together with you.
