Possible Overvaccination issue. Anyone else run into this issue, concerned?
Okay so from what I understand its the law here to vaccinate against rabies every year.
Well I recently had a vet friend tell me that their office as well as several other offices in the area and the vaccine clinics are overvaccinating. From what I understand is there is a 1 year vaccine and a 3 year vaccine. Well he said that they are vaccinating yearly with the 3 year vaccine. And several other places are too. Well this has me a bit worried because vaccinations are coming up this month for us and I worry about what this could do to her in the long run. This will be her 3rd rabies vaccine. And if she has gotten the 3 year already twice that is a lot of vaccine in 3 years. Anyone know what the long term affects of overvaccination are? What kind of harm this could be doing for my dog. When I was growing up we took our dog in for a rabies shot every 3 years. Now its every year but I assumed it was an annual vaccine. Not the 3 year vaccine every year. I called my vet and they said that is what they do as well. Can anything be done about this? Or is this just how its done now? Thanks I know this is kind of health question but its kind of an issue question too so I posted it here. If it needs to be moved please put it where you see fit. |
Dogs should only be getting the 3 year every three years. If your dogs have gotten the 3 year multiple years in a row you need to call your vet on that.
Check with your local ordinances. Here, dogs only need to be vaccinated every 3 years. MAKE SURE that you're only getting the 1 year vaccine every time you go in. |
From my understanding, the three year and one year are the same shot, at least around here. They will only mark you as "three year" if you prove your dog has gotten it before. If not, then you get the "one year", but it's the same thing, just different paperwork.

I know for atleast our county they are required to be vaccinated every year. And our previous county. I don't know if its a statewide thing or not. But I was surprised to hear that they were giving what was supposed to be a 3 year shot, yearly.
Atleast that is how I understood it being that there is a 1 year shot and a 3 year shot Then like CoolhandJean said if there is only one shot and its for 3 years, then they shouldn't require you to have it annually. I was told most states do it every 3 years but we are on a every year basis. |
we get a choice at my vet,1 or 3,i ussualy get 1 year, coz why not,the local admin wants a yearly and why spend all that money on something you dont need, like a 3 year shot

there are a couple different vaccines. One is the IMRAB, then the RABVAC1, and RABVAC3, if I'm not confused.. :P The IMRAB is 1 or 3, the RABVAC1 is a one year, and the RABVAC3 is a 3 year. So they *could* have given you a one year. You can check the paperwork from his previous shots; it might tell you.
However, at clinics, they load up all 3 year shots, and then if the dog doesn't have proof of a previous shot, they give them a 3 year, and make it good for 1. MAKE SURE they are giving the vaccines in her thigh, and to alternate each time. That way, if there is a cancer caused by the vaccines, it's a lot easier to amputate a leg than their neck. |

It's the same thing here too what CHJ said. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it every year unless the dog was a puppy.
Dixie got her rabies at 6 months and then has to do it again in a year. Rudy & Buster have the 3 year rabies vaccine. I think it depends on your vet as well. |
Yeah, our pups got their one year, and then (obviously) a year later, I got the three year (paperwork wise).
|
Yeah that's what I meant. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png Same here except for Dixie.

Yeah he said that we are kind of behind the times here, because most states do the 3 year vaccine. And it doesn't make sence that its required here annually.
|
Isn't there something about having titers as an exception to giving the vaccination?
In Colorado there is...you should look into that. I don't believe in vaccinations. |
Okay so I was doing some reading and it looks like there is a whole petition on the issue. I'll let you know what I find
|
Both of my dogs get the 3 year vaccine, and tags with the expiration date, it's also on their rabies certificate.
|
here you have to have them every year but my vet does the 3 year shot and has agreed to give me the tags for three years and putting it on their records every year, without redoing the vaccine every year. But i didnt tell you that http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png

I'm guessing it all depends on where you live. I work for a vet and the shot is the same whether it's a one year or three year. As a puppy you'll get the one year, and then when you come back it's a three year.
I understand that rabies is required by law, but I think in regards to all the shots the vets way overdo it. Personally I don't feel dogs need a new set of booster shots every year the same way that we as adults don't get booster shots the way we did as children. Do you all vaccinate every year or just limit it to rabies? |

When we had Trouble he had to get the Bordetella every 6 months or he couldn't get groomed. Sasha gets bordetella as needed. I mean sometimes if she has classes they require her to have had in the last 6 months. And boarding within the last 12 months. She didn't have it at all last year but she had to get it in April since she was being boarded. I don't so much have a problem with yearly vaccines as I do with the fact that I was told that she was getting a 3 year vaccine every year. If there are any other Tennesseans that see this, what do you do in your counties. I read that Metro Davidson County does 3 year now but not so much anywhere else. But a lot about the rabies and vaccine laws are hard to understand or unclear. It seems you almost have to trust your vet on that one, which sucks. Because I trust vets about as much as I trust regular doctors, not at all. Especially after what happened with Trouble. |
