Has she been fixed recently? She could be going through a false pregnancy.

Did she recently go thru a heat cycle?
The mothering of the tennis balls is normally displayed in a dog that is super hormonal from a false pregnancy.

Are there physiological signs of a false pregnancy? Other than 'mothering' tennis balls?

Sounds about right for a falsie. Nothing you can really do about it, maybe give her some extra attention and exercise to keep her occupied.

If she starts to show other signs of being falsly pregnant I'd contact a vet. There can be complications if that happens. Better to be safe than sorry.
