Need help..Pit question? Car attacked. Heavy Damage.

Pics are hard to tell how bad it actually is...

Something came onto my parents carport last night and destroyed the front of my moms Mustang. The black pieces everywhere are the remains of her chin spoiler. We are assuming that a cat ran and got under the hood and the animal was ripping the car apart to get to it. Something to have a jaw strong enough to puncture the metal and rip the bumper apart from the metal rivets...I have no idea. When my parents told me on the phone I thought bear but after seeing it I would have to assume it was some pissed off/vicious dog. The sheriff was there when I pulled up and he thinks it was a pit pull. Only assuming that because if it was a large dog it would have probably got on top of the car. It has some serious jaw power to be able to puncture metal like that. It was also small enough to get under the car and chew plastic under the engine as well.

After it hit the Mustang it went after our Jeep. My mom drove the Jeep to work so I couldn't get pics of it. Crazy?

A few updates throughout the day so I don't have to post them separate.

**UPDATE**
Just got off the phone with my dad. Animal control had stopped by and said it was not a dog. Florida Wildlife Commission stopped by and said it was a dog. They actually gathered DNA from the blood on the headlight and they found hair on the tire. The neighbor has a Boxer so they went next door for questions, etc. They examined the dog for cuts, bleeding etc. and it was fine. The owner did notify them they have had problems with the dogs across the street.

Currently animal control is across the street with their investigation...I will try and keep you updated.

**UPDATE**
Fur did not match dog across the street either.

Animal control is now saying they think it is a dog and Florida Wildlife Commission is saying they think it is a large cat (Panther, Bobcat, etc.)

I wanted to get your thoughts on this as I am obviously extremely curious if a Pit could actually cause damage such as this.

Wow, thats some incredible damage. BUT, to assume a pit bull did it is a bit to much, imo.

And an fyi... I merged your two threads to make it easier. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

gkruCRi1 05-19-2009 08:27 PM

Thanks http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png I edited the post with pics so it did not duplicate text.

I too am baffled by this but I knew you guys could probably shed some light on this since I have no knowledge of damage dogs can actually do to sheet metal on a car other than scratching it.

Had anyone ever seen a dog cause this sort of damage to a vehicle?

siklop 05-19-2009 08:29 PM

Why a Pit Bull http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/confused.png

Looks like a bear went after that car....http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/lol.gif

AriaDesser 05-19-2009 08:30 PM

I havnt. I know these guys are strong and all, but thats extreme damage. I think bobcat or something makes more sense. I am dying to know what it is though so keep us updated, please?? http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.png

FUNALA 05-19-2009 08:31 PM

I agree with Debbie. That looks like a bear did that damage. If you notice, one of the pictures, it looks like claw marks that are imbedded in the car

gkruCRi1 05-19-2009 08:31 PM

No bears around my parents house. It was small enough to get under the car and do some biting...who knows. I will let you know though.

grosqueneen 05-19-2009 08:33 PM

where do you live?

from those scratches I would say it might be the Mantouk monster. or perhaps the chupacabras??

other suspects:

Mountain lion?
WereWolf?
Wolverine??

I did it.

gkruCRi1 05-19-2009 08:34 PM

Pensacola, Florida (panhandle)

FUNALA 05-19-2009 08:36 PM

How about a alligator?

ZenDers 05-19-2009 08:38 PM

I doubt it was a dog, unless a mastiff was there or some other huge breed, but probably some wild cat, if there are no bears.

gkruCRi1 05-19-2009 08:38 PM

They collected fur from the tire and under the engine. No gator.

mGUuZRyA 05-19-2009 08:55 PM

Interesting. No idea what it could be, but all the detective work trying to find out seems a bit much. This is the kind of thing that should be covered under the "comprehensive" portion of your mom's auto insurance (that means usually no deductible and no rate hike).

PZXjoe 05-19-2009 08:57 PM

Do they have bears in Florida?

My guess is some kind of big, wild cat.

@buddysmom: I agree on the extreme detective work. It's like CSI or something, I wonder if they will do DNA on the hair and dust the hood for paw prints? I mean there has to be some kind of animal criminal database they can compare the samples with LOL.

11Woxsepmoomo 05-19-2009 09:00 PM

Wow. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/eek.png

I'm sure your mom's insurance company is going to get a kick out of that story.

However, I would not think it's a dog. Even just looking at those scratches, dog nails are usually not so pointed that they could leave such deep, thin scratchmarks such as those. My money is on some other animal.

Also, I'm wondering what kind of wild animal would be so desperate to do such damage. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/confused.png It must be very, very hungry thus making it very, very dangerous.

Also, bobcats are not unheard of in the Pensacola area. Heck, we've got one living behind my parents' house (& our soon to be new house). They are plenty big enough and strong enough to do that kind of damage, but still small enough to fit under the car as you've described. The one behind my parents' house looks to be approx. 45 lbs and quite the muscular creature.

Keep us updated on all this!

Oh, and the next time someone suggest it's a vicious 'pit bull', just keep repeating "Why?" and then inform them of their own misinformation on the dogs. http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/wink.png

moredasers 05-19-2009 09:01 PM

I can't imagine a dog being able to do that...they leave some scratches in paint, but not grooves like those look to be. Seems like a cat would have sharp enough claws to get that deep into paint and metal. Wildlife definitely aren't as shy as they used to be of people and cars...we had a fisher come into our yard and kill one of our outdoor cats, right under our living room window. This was also Northern MN though...

Can't wait for updates on what it is though!

gkruCRi1 05-19-2009 09:03 PM

We do have bears in the area but whatever it was got under the car as well.

I am sure they usually do not to DNA tests but something that causes damage like this to a car could obviously do serious damage to a person. There is a baseball park next to the property which houses huge tournaments and games on a nearly daily basis.

I am guessing they want to find out what this is for safety reasons. If we were just out in the middle of nowhere I am sure they could care less.

My tax dollars are paying for it so I say go for it..kind of cool actually.

My mom talked to insurance company and even though it is comprehensive they are going to make them pay the $500 deductible. Not sure if you caught everything or not in the first post but our Jeep was heavily damaged as well. We have 2 vehicles to be repaired.

timgreyuvcz 05-19-2009 09:04 PM

With scratches so high up I would think that there are some paw prints in the dust and dirt on that car. that would be the way to identify what did that. It was no dog.
