Default Question on 'pit bull' history
I just had a question reguarding the history of the breed(s). I have done a lot of research on 'pit bulls' since rescuing a puppy a month ago from the pound. I have had several people comment on 'pit bulls' being bred as nannys for children... Is this true? I have not read anything on this but my own pup whos only 6 months old 'mothers' my 18 month old son. He follows him room to room and if he cries he gets up and licks him in the face. I love to watch because Harley will go into the room my son is in and lay on the opposite side of the room and if my son goes behind a chair he will get up and lay somewhere else in the room so that he can keep his eyes on my son (even though he usually just goes to sleep).

Since you guys are so full of info I figured Id get the most accurate info here rather than searching the web and trying to figure out what site is 'true'.

The SBT was, not the APBT although it was not uncommon for an APBT to be sent home after a fight wounded or not with the children, Human Aggression was never tollerated and from my understanding, the APBT was also protective but I don't think the APBT has the name "Nanny Dog"

Yes, which is why I said Im not sure which breed my puppy acutally is. The pound called him a 'pit bull' but Im aware that there is no such breed. But of those I dont know which he is. I believe I read (a quick read that Im not 100% I read right) that AmStaffs cannot have the red nose. Which he is the diluted red nose, so I believe AmStaff is ruled out... still a lot of possibilities. The dog at the pound next to him was put as a stafforidshire terrier... I have yet to figure out their logic when determining the breed of the 'strays' they bring in...

While the APBT was bred for fighting and not as a nanny, it earned the nickname the "nanny dog" because of its good nature with children.

Is a Dobey a breed ? How about a Rotti ?

A pit bull is a shortened version of the one and only dog that has the word pit in its name. No other dog has the word pit bull in its name so when the word pit bull is used it is meant to describe the only breed with the words in it and that would be the American Pit Bull Terrier.

And yes, the APBT was known to be called the nanny dog aswell.

Do not buy into the umbrella term, correct people as they mis-use the name, that is the only way we can seperate these dogs when they get mislabled.

Yes and no.

To a true APBT fancier, the one and only Pit Bull is the APBT.

It was seemed to become a catch all. Especially to the govt., Joe Blow, and the Media, a "pit bull" is any dog with short haired and muscles.

The SBT is the dog most associated with the term nanny dog. The KC breed description mentions it to this day. Before they were recognised as distinct breeds, they were all just half and halfs or pit dogs so the term could very well have been associated with them as well. They were not above killing kids then any more than they are now. The difference is there was less media reach in days of old so less people heard about it. I saw a report i think from the early 1920's about a child being killed by some working dogs and I remember thinking if it was to happen now it would be blazen all over the papers and TV but there was only a small article about it.

There is only one true "pit bull" and that is the APBT. Yes, many, many years ago it was a mixture of a few breeds of dog, but then it did become a breed of its own, just like so many other breeds of today.
There is an extreme rarity of "TRUE" breeds today thanks to man mixing dogs up like crazy to make a designer dog.
The biggest problem lies in the fact that the average citizen couldn't tell a "pit bull" from any big headed shortcoated dog if he had to.
