I know that AKC and UKC publish statistics of dogs registered and litters produced, I don't know about the other kennel clubs.
Hey Julie:

AKC does publish their registration figures for each breed each month . There are around 1600 to 1800 American Staffordshire Terriers registered each year.

UKC and ADBA do not publish their figures, so the numbers are not known. UKC RANKS the breeds and APBTs are number 2, right behind some hound breed (and UKC registers a BUNCH of THEM).

I would think that between UKC and ADBA that they register a lot more than 1600 to 1800 Pits, but they aren't giving out the figures.

I have no idea about the other registries.

There's also the Sporting Dog Registry, the All American Dog Registry and the Bona Fide Kennel Club.

They register the breed, don't they? That was the original question.

A few thoughts:

A registry is basically a record keeping business and can be lucrative.

The age we live in makes it fairly easy to set up a registry; computer, internet, high quality home printers, etc. Internet business is big business; in many fields.

I have no answers, but talking about it might shed some light or offer solutions for the future.

PNWPBR, you describe the registry you contributed as 'local'. Do you know them or dogs registered by them? What was the purpose of them forming another registry?

EDOGZ818, I'm not sure I would have added any 'underground' registries, in an effort to keep them that way.

I had never heard of this one: The American Pit Bull Registry, until I read about it here in the training forum. How old is this registry and same questions as above?

Default How many
kennel clubs are there registering our breed(s)? Do we have a statistician on the forum? In the years I have owned the breed, I have seen an unbelievable increase in numbers, and I ask this question in a sincere effort to try to figure out those numbers. I realize this will not include dogs born without registration, but it's a start. I know that AKC and UKC publish statistics of dogs registered and litters produced, I don't know about the other kennel clubs.

So--- we have:

UKC (United Kennel Club)
ADBA (American Dog Breeders Association)
AKC (American Kennel Club)
ABKC (American Bully Kennel Club)
CKC (Continental Kennel Club)
The American Pit Bull Registry

Anybody want to add to these?

Just heard of one the other day. Bloodlines Kennel Club, which seems to be American Bully-focused. http://www.bloodlineskennelclub.com/

AAPBA is a local (Pacific Northwest) registry that's about 10 years old. They started with open registration. "Looks like a pure pit so lets give it pure bred paperwork". I rescued a pit/Ambulldog cross from the pound and they registered it as a purebred. Anyway, they used to be called the All American Pit Bull Association, now they have changed their name to All American Premier Breeds Administration. They now register ALL breeds.
