PLEASE HELP!
My 5yr old neutered pitty is becoming very dog aggressive, this is new behavior! He has been well trained and socialized, loved cared for, etc. He gets along great with his housemate and my cats. But God forbid he encounters a strange dog. He fixates on that dog and wants (for lack of a better word) wants to kill, he wont listen to me and i have to go to an extreem to get his attention. Im afraid he will turn on his housemate who is oblivious to his aggression and just wants to play!!! I need advise before something terrible happens. A deeply worried mom, Luv2Pits |

Dog Aggression and "pit bulls" go hand in hand, it's a genetic trait. You can't train it out of them, but you can manage it. Keep a close watch on your "pit bull" and other dog when they are together. Never leave them unsupervised. If they do get into a fight, you will have to start keeping them separated.
A good thread on managing a multi-dog household - http://www.pitbull-chat.com/showthre...dog+aggression |

Pit bulls are typically Dog Aggressive at some point of their maturity... it is normal. You cannot eliminate dog aggression, you can, however, manage it. If you do not have a break stick, also called a parting stick, get one!! You may never need it, but better to have and not need, than need and not have! One of the members on here has them, his name is Boogieman, you can PM him... you can also get one from this site http://www.pbrc.net/breaksticks.html
Do not, ever, leave your dogs alone, unattended.... don't put them out in the back yard together without being outside with them. You may have to crate and rotate, a lot of members do this, for the safety of their dogs. But never leave them alone together, unattended.... it's just asking for trouble. CoolHandJean gave you a great thread to read on multi dog households. Many members here have more than one dog.... I have 6, but only one bully, and she is never left unattended with any of my other dogs... She's a sweetheart, but I've also broken up a few fights... thank God for having break sticks... and having more than one is a great idea... I have 2. Please don't panic... your dog depends on you to maintain your composure... someone has to be in control at all times... that's going to have to be you! It's kinda like having kids, someone has to maintain control in a panic situation, kids look to the parents to be the one that's cool, calm, and collected.... same with the dogs... You will be ok... we all have dog aggressive dogs, some are more so than others, but we all figure out what to do and it works, you can have more than one dog.. but you can never trust your dog not to fight a strange dog. Your dog may not start the fight, but he will definitely finish the fight! You just have to prevent it from ever becoming an issue.. you can do it!! |
