Default Canon G12 or the G1X
Hi team,

My 9 year old Canon A80 finally died after I after the underwater housing sprung a leak so I need a new camera.
I can get the G12 for $390 and an underwater housing for $280 so all up this looks like good value. However, the G1X has a great sensor but is around $750 + a housing for the new model will be at least $450.

Some points.
  • I travel a lot as well as dive and the G1X lens actually sticks out a lot further than the G12 therefore packing it may be an issue.
  • The G1x needs a removable lens cap and the G12's is a built-in number.
  • The G12 has a larger battery. People are saying 50% more shots from a charge. A second battery could save me carrying a charger.
  • The G12 only has 720p movie. The The G1X has 1080 at 24 frames.

Some questions
  • Is the image quality of the G1X going to be glaringly better than the G12?
  • What would be the maximum size of a quality blown up print from a G12 vs G1X be?

Any thing else you would like to comment on will be great.

I had a Canon Powershot A80 and it was a great little camera, particularly at night using flash. Currently I use a Canon G11, which is also excellent and produces even better photos, aided by the extra pixels. The batteries last much longer than the normal AA size, meaning you can take well over 500 photos before needing a recharge.

Don’t know about the G1X, but the G12 should be excellent. These cameras are highly adaptable and very easy to transport and use.

The PowerShot G1X sounds like another terrific Canon camera, although it would have problems photographing small things at night with flash as the closest you can get is 20 cm, plus the aperture is a little low too. Still if you did not want this type of close-up work, it would be a very nice camera.
