Default e-readers: What works best?
Sorry, I'm being lazy (again).

I have, I think, a first generation or second generation Kindle... I love that damn thing SO much! However, I saw on the TV that it now comes with a touch screen... Because everything else I have operates on touch, I find myself accidently touching the screen to change pages and stuff like that...

I am wondering if it's worth upgrading to the new shiny kindle...

The other thing I was thinking about/looking at, is that I like to jot down notes/thoughts about random stuff whilst i'm reading, and I was wondering if the e-readers have a notepad function - not necessarily to jot down notes on the page of the story you're reading, but as a seperate application of sorts?

Whilst researching such things a little while ago, I did come across some that had note taking functionality but I am not sure if they came in to being or were just vapourware. There was one I really liked the look of, I think it might have been an Asus but I am pretty sure that one was definitely vapourware. It also seems increased functionality means increased price and sooner or later you hit a pricepoint that warrants just going to a full blown tablet.

As for the "touch", I know someone who has a different eReader [anagram of book] that just had to have the upgrade from non-touch to touch. Personally I can't see the advantage of a swipe to turn a page over a button press, but they seem to think it is worlds better...

The Kindle Touch is very nice but I'm not sure that I prefer it to the Kindle 2 I have with keyboard. The Kindle Touch is certainly not at all colourful although the screensavers are different - who looks at screensavers anyway? My stepdaughter has a Kindle 3 (keyboard) which she loves. You can annotate easily with the Kindle 2 with the keyboard, but the Kindle Touch feels a little more clumsy to me, except for reading where its compact size is nice and, whether it's imagination or not, page turning seems slower. My Kindle Touch is WiFi, not 3G. Either makes a nice e-reader. I'm not much into making notes as I read. I can usually remember where I saw something and find it again. Being able to check Wikipedia has been useful a few times on the Kindle 2. Overall I've used the old Kindle a lot more than I use the Kindle Touch.

Kindle Fire has additional functionality and is really a tablet, but it's anyone's guess when it will be formally released in Australia - I suspect the 3G Whispernet on the Kindle Fire won't be the same as dedicated e-readers. You can buy them now as grey imports but there can be issues with 3G connectivity.

I check the Mobileread Kindle Forum when I want to know more. Not much they don't have info on and they are pretty good about responding to questions.
