Default A thread for the gardeners and their Q&A.
A bit presumptuous of myself to call myself a gardener.. but still.

Can we kick it off with this little cross forum post?

Thanks. I’d be interested in that. I’m get some mystery things popping up from time to time. roughbarked said:

Scratch that, I found it here I will order it.

I have a question! What are people planting in their vegetable patches over the cooler months?

I think i will be frequenting here...

What are some ideas for having vegetables and whatnot if i don't have a garden to plant them in?

We apparently will be moving soon (and probably to somewhere that _doesn't_ have a yard, so what are my options then?

Gosh, overwhelmed within minutes..
um.. cooler months.. any Brassica should have already been sown and transplanted but you can still have a go(I grow mine as semi-perennial and also take cuttings to spread them about). Though Brassica are Cruciferae.. and that includes radish, rocket which can go with you anywhere. Radish 4 weeks from seed to eat, rocket.. start eating as soon as big enough to sacrifice a leaf.. Lettuces can also be all year round. Various things grouped under 'spinach'.. but right now you should be thinking onions leeks garlic.. broad beans and peas.

Outback of any stupormarket, blowing around on the sides of the road, floating in the ocean.. You can find polystyrene boxes.

These make excellent transportable beds for leafy veg, herbs and chivey oniony things.. and etc. (such as strawberries.. will need a plastic bag on the bottom of the box..almost)

Thanks Roughbarked. Might give raddish, beans, garlic a try. Maybe lettuace and onions, but I'm not sure how they'd go (I've always thought that they get destroyed by pests quicky?)

No excuse.. you could be picking up all the poly boxes, milk cartons and making boxes full of native replacement plants for landcare work.. ..get with it ..

That's the thing, I'm so busy doing the above and it takes up all the spare area around my place, no room for veggies

Not usually.. you do need to watch snail slug and slater populations.. but the cooler months are more often free of many summer pests. Garlic/onions are usually pest free unless something is wrong with the micro-ecosystem balance. By this I do mean that one needs to do more time planning than slashing about with a spade. Learn to make good dirt.
•people who are gardeners do not have thumbs.
more like thumbs

Potatoes are another that one should be considering .. Unless really cold.(and even then)

I've been known to have more than 60,000 native plants in tubes and milk cartons in poly boxes and.. be pulling parsley, radish, onions, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, carrot, chamomile and other weeds out of most of those tubes. .. in any one season..

and I'm not spruiking.. so let's not go there.

What I am basically saying is that I have many times over proven that one must be lying to oneself if one uses the excuse.. no room to grow food.

And don't forget the Gardening Forum, which is hosted by Uncle Chris on these very forums ... eg

http://tokyo3.org/forums/gardening/

That's for if you want just the Gardening Forum but if you want the regular forums plus the gardening ... oh, hang on ... there's the three old science forums plus the HOliday Forum here ... http://chrw.customer.netspace.net.au...shr-vBull.html

but not one with those three plus the gardening one.

I read the gardening one a lot, and woud heartily recommend it, but rarely have anything to add there ... it is a great resource.
