My first was a Packard Bell 486DX in the early 90's as a business expense. Used it for a fax, answering service and to put in the "Call before you dig" permits with Utilities Protection Center, contract bids, invoices etc. UPC sent this lady out to our house to install the software. I thought that was pretty cool, lol. The internet sucked back then but it was great for business tasks.

I think I paid $1,400 with a ink jet printer and 179'ed it on taxes.

Used to surf the net round a mate's house sometimes from about 1997. Started using the library for an hour at a time to e-mail the missus before we got married and she was in Australia in about 2001. Got into forums using the computer round my mums house in about 2004, finally got a computer and online at home in 2005.

unapelosina 11-20-2011 05:28 PM

Around 2000 when I moved down South. Was in my early 30's back then.

Do they still use libraries at the college/university level now?http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...smilies/24.gif God, I actually have to think to what the Dewey (sp?) decimal system is.

My college's library is basically just one big computer lab.

On the other hand though, I still use books in the library if I'm looking for something specific for a research paper.

EmpaccalGah 11-20-2011 08:31 PM

I love libraries. Used the college library from time to time when I was doing research for my Psychology A Level. But it was mainly just full of computers and the books it had were old. They didn't always have the information I needed because it didn't have any studies/theories from the last 20+ years.

In this country, journals and periodicals are computerised by and large now. But generally, books are still the primary reference material for all major uni's. That might change in the future, but not for a while. I think the library at my uni has a collection of about a million books altogether, including loans from other libraries. Such a collection is costly and inefficient though, so I know there are plans to downsize and electronise what they can.

Early nineties, I remember rushing off to internet cafes, trying and miserably failing at understanding html....things have progressed since
