Just wondering what is the best Media Server Software to use?

I want to be able to load it on my server (dont want to you windows media server) and be able to access files from my PS3 over the WIFI

The easiest and a free method would be to use vuse. You can download at vuse.com. You can then use this to download music, movies, tv shows, whatever you want. I use it to download, but use Windows Vista Ultimate to stream to my Xbox, but have used vuse to do this as well. Both work beautifully. Vuse will also convert a file type to one that is compatible with the device you are streaming to and it automatically detects what you have connected to your network. Check it out.

I've heard good things about TVersity, but to be honest, I never got it to work right.

If you're using it for the purposes of seeing things and playing them on the PS3 - then PS3 Media Server is the most apt and useful. It's the one I use on the laptop for anything I watch on the PS3 that the NAS drive's media server can't cope with. It will automatically detect the PS3 on the network too (assuming it's on of course).

As for the second bit - being able to see files and get them *from* the PS3, I'm not sure anything exists in that respect. I did have a quick hunt around previously when wondering about the same thing but didn't find anything. I resorted to the USB way.

But i found Winamp also do a media server and have given that a good and it works ok. but i do like this PS3 one!

i use Plex on my iMac to stream to my Apple tv. I use also XBMC.


Either of these is a good option.

What makes you say that? What sort of network set up you running?

Sony's media streaming capability I have found to be adequate, as long as you have the network controller set up right, but there are problems with bandwidth restrictions among other things.

Its wirless bassed but it works sometimes and some times it dosent... its stupid!
