Comments from DSLreports.com re: Hughes net:

If you have no choice, it's much better than dial-up, but it is way too costly for what you get.

At this point I can recommend this service as a LAST resort only. Please, LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR INTERNET. Satellite isnt worth it.

After filing a complaint with the FCC, I was contacted by a Hughes 'executive customer care' rep who took a month off my bill and offered to release me from my contract, so keep this technique in mind.

If there are other options, I would say, "NO!" to brother.

I have satellite TV and DSL. I do not want bundled services that are currently offered through AT&T's u-verse or the cable companies.

My cousin is currently using hughes and is not pleased. She has the money, and it is faster than dial up. She never uses her computer during peak hours as the connection speed can be slower than when she was on dial up. She does not use the internet much more than for email and possibly a web site or 2 per day, if that. She lives smack dab in the middle of nowhere so she is content with the trade off.

Note to self: Never show cousin my connection speed. I think she would stab me through the heart in envy.

Wireless broadband, depending where he lives. Am getting 1500 down, 200 up. Sprint.

Use Hughes net daily for each well. Works fine for this usage. Lots of information up and down. Seems to be more business orientated.

My broadband, I think I pay about $70 a month for the card. 24 hours usage. But these are just like a cell phone, so speed depends on location and company.

Have to agree with that. Any kind of Satellite connection is going to be expensive and difficult to get consistent signal. There are other kinds of wireless or even spending the money to bring in a t1 line that will give you better performance.

Thank you all very much. He is in a contract with Dish and wanting to drop his AT &T phone service. What I can tell, he would not save money at all by doing this and it would probably cost him a little more per month to have Hughes and a cell phone bill just to give up the A T & T land line.

So you are saying he has broadband. DSL? It would be retarded to give that up for satellite. Dish for internet is only used when you have NO other choice. It has too many problems. Poor reception, lag time, weather issues.

Forgive me for being dense , but at this time his options are to get Hughes through his Dish account, or to keep his AT & T phone line and get internet through them. He was wanting to get rid of his land line and get a cell phone is the whole problem. I will tell him his options and let him decide. He is on a very limited budget and wants to get out as cheaply as possible, so while speed might not be an issue, reliablity certainly is.

I use ATT Yahoo and have enjoyed it for years with few problems. I called last week and got a $5.00 upgrade to a faster speed dsl and at that time, the lady told me about (tried selling me on) their mobile phone svc. It sounded pretty tempting. Something like 1000 min. a mo. with free family to family, free cell to landlines. Sounded good.
