Default More Windows 7 stuff
Giz Explains: Why the Windows 7 Taskbar Beats Mac OS X's Dock

Basically an article about why the Windows 7 taskbar (or "superbar" as they're idiotically calling it) is better than the OSx dock. Personally, I just want my simple classic Windows taskbar back.

What are you running now? I still have XP and will keep it until convinced otherwise. When's 7 suppose to be out to the public?

XP is fairly solid, after SP2. I've had a few bluescreens and had to do a repair once or twice over the several years that I've had it, but not too bad overall. But it would get boring if the thing never crashed - I'd have nothing to keep me busy

Still running XP, although I suffered with Vista for a while. The Windows 7 beta is out now (legitimately). Link to it:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...-download.aspx

I tried to install the leak on my desktop. It scanned my hardware, formatted my drive, then told me my hardware was incompatible and got stuck in a boot loop till I put Ubuntu back on it. Got it to work on a friends computer though. It was definitely faster than Vista and all the fancy shit (Aero and such) didn't seem to slow it down. I don't like the taskbar at all, maybe that's just me though. I'm downloading the legit one to try on my desktop again, hopefully get a little more time with it.

I'll wait for the final . . . and the reviews . . . and the service pack, then maybe I'll give it a go

Maybe post back with your results with the beta

The reviews of it are good so far. Like I said, I tried it on a friends computer (older Vaio) and it actually ran really well. I'll let you know if I get it working on my desktop tonight. Probably won't since I'm downloading at school and only at 29%. Hopefully Firefox's pause download will work since I'll be leaving in about 2 hours, I've been going at it for about an hour an a half now. And there is something better than the dock, it's the taskbar.

I haven't messed with the dock - other than some XP variants. They were ok, but I'm used to the taskbar and prefer it as well

I'm assuming you mean RocketDock and the like? I've played with those as well, but like you said, the taskbar works fine as it is. I don't know why Microsoft decided to be all hip and sleek all of a sudden, but it's pissing me off.

And with all that shit that they're doing to the taskbar, it's for the worst. I suppose if you can turn that shit off and not "pin" anything to the taskbar it would behave just like the good old Playskool Blue XP bar I'm used to though. Although the 7 taskbar is awkwardly tall.

I like my desktop space. I hate crap cluttering it up. I suppose there's a way to resize the taskbar? Otherwise I'll just autohide the damn thing

I couldn't find one. I think they made it bigger so you could see icons better, since they felt it necessary to get rid of text identifiers on the taskbar.

More user friendly nonsense. Let's dumb it down to icons for those who can't read

Actually without the text it does make some sense to make it bigger.

Progress . . . meh.

Actually, it makes more since to just leave the fucking text. My download failed though so I'm starting it back up. Probably be ready tomorrow.

Got it installed on a Virtualbox on my main laptop. Found out how to make the taskbar act like it should, so that's promising. I'm downloading the x64 version and I'm gonna try it on my second HD on my laptop. Probably won't be till this weekend though.

OK - so the taskbar is customizable at least. Figured it would be

I was hoping for it. I had read that the new system was mandatory.

I ended up installing the x64 version on my main laptop. I can write up a full review if anyone's interested.
