Notebook and laptops is almost same thing. Usually notebook is suitable for basic productivity and surfing the internet, but it doesn't have an optical drive so you can't play DVDs/ CDs on it On the other hand laptops have optical drive.

Notebooks are light-weight, economical, energy-efficient and especially suited for wireless communication and Internet access. Laptops are heavy and costly as compare to notebooks. I have a Sony Vio notebook and I just love it..

The compact size of notebooks have its own pros and cons. Being small in size means you can easily carry them anywhere, much more conveniently than you can carry laptops, but this small size also means you have to compromise on several features which laptops and offer. So, which one is better, is really depends on priorities and taste.
