yes i did do that.. I read that i might need to have drivers installed in order to complete setup but I have no idea where to get those or what to look for.. It says to get them online but i cant do that because im on a blank hard drive.. it seems like the DVD/CD rom goes for a bit and then stops..

Can you download the CD/DVD drivers to a thumb drive and install them that way??

Nline would know more about the particulars of this. Wonder if he is lurking around somewhere.....

That error number is a file read error. Few things come to mind. Usually when you have a problem reading a file from a DVD is is because the DVD is dirty or damaged. Look at the disk and check it for fingerprints, scratches or other blemishes. Next on the list may be a faulty DVD player. Without a functioning operating system that will be difficult to test.

The next concern is your Hard Drive Failure. What caused the failure? What kind of failure was it? Are you 100% certain that the drive is damaged or that there isn't other problems in this system? And finally you didn't mention what your computer is. Brand and Model number are key to understanding problems like this. There may be drivers issues. The hardware if it is too old may not be able to run Windows 7.

Help!!! Windows 7 install on new hard drive not working
Yup. That's what's wrong alright.

Windows 7 is a resource hog, and from what I understand won't run well without at least a dual core (and preferred quad core) processor. Of course, Nline is here and he can tell you. But you might ask him about Linux.

This system is likely having other hardware issues. I am thinking you either have the bad luck of having a bad DVD rom drive as well or you have a faulty motherboard that is causing I/O problems. There are drivers you need to install for this system but that occurs after you have installed Windows 7 and can get to a desktop.

Drivers for this system can be found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...t=3980095#N180

It could be a low memory issue.Windows is such a memory hog.

Here's an article that might help: http://www.geeks.com/techtips/2011/h...hard-drive.asp

Good Luck :-)

Thank you but I think we are off the mark a bit here. We are not talking about windows on a running system. He is trying to install windows on a blank drive. Windows performance issues can't be addressed until he gets it running. His specs for the system model he mentioned come with 8GB of Ram. That should be plenty of ram for Windows 7 to run on. He should have a quad core processor so once Windows gets running on this box it should have good performance rates.

BFFT mentioned Linux and many flavors of Linux, like Ubuntu come with bootable CD or DVD roms that you can run off of the disk without installing it. That would be a good way to test to see if the DVD drive is working correctly. I suspect you just have fingerprint on the disk and a good cleaning with a lint free cloth should get it running.

Oh,the poster asked for advice.New optical drives are cheap enough but you're right it could be just dust or static interference.

thanks for all the input. I also tried to install the 32 bit just to see what happened and it was the same sad story.. starts and then freezes.. I guess it must be the drive which seems odd that my hard drive and dvd drive both go out at the same time.. or maybe motherboard issues with stinks.. Seems like a trip to the geek squad is in order. That's up to you. Keep in mind that I offer a $20 discount to anyone that brings their computer to me to be fixed correctly after Geek Squad screws it up. Just show me your Best Buy receipt within 7 days of your Geek Squad rape uh repair attempt. Or just show me a geek squad estimate and I give you the same discount.

Just something i've experianced with installing windows XP & windows 7 is memory issues.
Sometimes, i've had to install windows with just one stick of ram in the PC.

My new Phenom system can run ram in dual channel but it refused to install windows 7 if both sticks were inserted in the motherboard.
After it installed & I was on the desktop I put the 2nd stick in & have had no problems since.

I've seen that once myself on a Vista system. The Windows Installer is really just a very watered down version of Xp. It isn't the same thing as what is being installed.

I usually see it with generic ram & the economy name brand stuff.
