This is either a WMP help question, or a Firefox help question.
I have used the download tool to download a few songs from Playlist.com (well, not me, but a coworker that is asking for my help). She is wanting to burn these songs to CD, but windows media player doesn't recognize the file type it will open the file, and it will play the file, but it says it doesn't recognize it and it may not play properly. even after i open the file, it doesn't identify it. this means i cannot associate the filetype with WMP to add the files to the library. without doing this, i cannot burn the songs to cd. any advice? |

i am looking on my computer, and i have about 10 files total that i have downloaded using the same tool. out of that 10, there are 2 that are left as "file", the rest are mp3. it is possible that i converted them to mp3 using Acidpro 4.0 or Audacity, but i can't recall. My coworker has neither of those programs (or the ability to use them, i don't think).
also, i use xp, she has vista. but isn't there a way in windows to assign it manually? |

What is the file extension? If i right click and go to properties, it will tell me that the file type is "File". It does not recognize the file to give it an extension. if i could manually assign the extension as .wmv, or whatever the file really is, i could likely get WMP to recognize it, and allow me to add it to a playlist. when i managed that programming team, they would have to send me .exe's via email. Since MS Outlook will block .exe filetypes, they would have to send them as .dll's (i think), and i would just change the filename when saving it. could i rename it using windows explorer to alter the file extension? I haven't messed with dos in well over a decade, and really don't want to go into dos on her vista machine. man, i don't like vista at all. |

Are you certain that windows isn't hiding the file type. By default windows explorer will do that.
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=193 This is for vista: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/1269/...le_extensions/ |

Are you certain that windows isn't hiding the file type. By default windows explorer will do that. you know what....i may have figured it out. The file is an MP3 file. when i download it, it has a filename like "25345.mp3", and i overwrite that to name the file based on artist - song. when i do this, i haven't been typing in ".mp3" to define the filetype. Will windows not automatically figure this out after you open the file, though? Could i go and rename it using the rename feature in windows explorer? |

nope. i usually go through and change that setting (and the hidden files and folders setting) when i get a new computer that i either own or will be using. |

Correct. Windows has no way to figure out the file type except by the extension. When you change the file name in Vista it should by default not highlight the ext but if your use to the old way Xp did it you will highlight the whole name by habit. I'm guessing that it what you did here. i just added ".mp3" to the file name |
