I'm not sure... I think I got something at an unknown time and then one day it started redirecting me. For example... I'd go to google, search something, click on a link that is supposed to send me to wikipedia or something, and BAM I'd be redirected to a site that would pop-up something saying I had a virus. But it did this several times before actually messing with my computer. I even would do a scan after that and it would show nothing at all. Then one day I turned on my computer and none of my programs worked at all and that Windows Police Pro kept popping up repeatedly. It kind of blended itself in as an actual windows program.
i fought something like that off of my sisters computer for her once. What a nightmare.

she got it by clicking on a link to download a virus scanner program (i had told her to download AVG, and she just didn't know better i guess).

On the CD? Microsoft Product Keys are on a sticker on the computer itself. You not using a pirate copy are you?

Be sure to install Service Pack 3, Windows Defender, and IE 7. 8 is optional but 6 is asking to get pwnd! Firefox 3.5 with adblock and noscript will help keep that crap off the system again.
