That is a good price for a Windows product. I kind of wonder what this means though from the article:

The offer, however, is limited in both duration and by the number of copies Microsoft is willing to sell, although Microsoft would not specify that figure. Does that mean they may limit the number of copies initially available for purchase, or that at this low price, you'll only be able to use it a few times if you upgrade/crash/whatever? Bill Gates is notorious for having a vision of computer and internet services that have to be rented from providers.

I'm running the Windows 7 64bit RC, I think it's an improvement on Vista 64bit, but it doesn't look like they are giving a pre-release discount on the Ultimate version, like the are Home and Pro.

They will only have a limited number of upgrade units for sale at that price. M$ claims that they will have more on hand for this launch then they did for Vista. The did the same thing at the vista launch.

"more on hand" is deceptive, since you can purchase it for download, it isn't as if they have 1 million dvd's and once they sell them all, or once July 11th passes, they will be out. The product isn't even available until October. It's a temporary loss leader. Maybe it's a test. I'll take it.

Purchase for Download? I think you have incorrect information there. Microsoft has NEVER offered any of it's OS for download. Beta yes but none for PURCHASE. DO you have a link where they are stating otherwise because that isn't what Microsoft has told me. They thought about doing it for Vista product upgrades. Moving from Home to Ultimate but pulled the plug on that just before product launch. They felt it would lead to to much piracy.

• Make sure your PC is compatible with Windows 7. Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.
• Windows 7 will be available starting on Oct. 22, 2009.
Your card will not be charged until your order is shipped or the product is made available for download.
• Promotional pricing is available on Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional upgrade versions only. This promotional pricing is a limited time offer, while supplies last, and is limited to three (3) copies per edition per customer.
• See the Pre-Orders section for additional details.

Honestly I think you have found a typo but I'll going to email my Microsoft Product Support rep and ask him. All the SKUs I have do not list a downloadable version.

I think that is just the preorder page. NOTHING on there said anything about being able to download the product. Yup, you can order it online but that is it. They ship you the box with the discs in it in October.

On another note, I do see that Apple is offering a download of the Snow Leopard developer build as mentioned in this article: http://www.gearlive.com/news/article...able-for-devs/

It may not be a typo, because it doesn't explicitly says MS is going to offer it for download. Seems like boiler-plate text from their store (which includes downloadable products) that at least gives them the option to offer Win7 as a download...though I agree with nLine they most likely won't.

Well I heard from my rep and he tells me that you can download Vista. News to me. But understandable. I can't resell it there is no SKUs to offer to me. If someone downloads it then I am out of the loop. As a reseller that isn't something I would want to support as it takes sales away from me. So they don't make a big deal telling us about it.

He did confirm that there will be limited number of upgrade units both physical disks and online. He would not tell me details, he doesn't even know them.

I've bought Office for download from Microsoft. They give you a key and a link for download.

I've done it several times.

When you go to click "Buy", a window pops up asking if you want it for download, a disk, or download and disk (and this option is an additional $14)

Yes and more expensive then many retailers online! I can get it cheaper and get the full retail box. You pay for the bandwidth.

Most the software we use now is downloaded. Without a working license key, most of it is useless after 30 days.

When I have bought office from Microsoft directly they had some special offer. I always bargain shop.

I've already paid for the bandwidth.

That's the only way I'd buy it. IMO it ought to be cheaper directly from Microsoft and no middle man to mess with. Tells you how much a markup there is on this crap.

FWIW:

Stuff to know before jumping from Windows XP to Windows 7

http://www.enduserblog.com/2009/07/s...windows-7.html

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Beta mentioned in the article:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

For grins I just ran it on my pc with XP. Takes a few minutes but...my system meets the requirements with a few small software upgrades necessary. As the article mentions, it also says I would need to do a clean install and reinstall necessary software.
