Default Not a good thing...
A friend of mine brought his computer over today and said it wasn't running right. This is what I found when I opened the case. I wonder why it wasn't working right?

That's amazing.

It only now just started giving him problems?

He must not do to much with it.

Pets, home renovations, living in a dusty area ect.

While PC cases arn't air tight, when you expell hot air with fans out the back (usually at the top) it pulls cool air in from front vents.

Since most PC's like that are close to the floor where dust & pet hair settles it gets sucked in.

The computer has fans inside the case, which cool certain parts. So these little fans suck in air outside the case, into the computer case. About that simple. Little dust, this is what can happen.

Can this happen with a laptop? And how do you clean it out.

The other reason the dust accumulates so bad is that computers, monitors, and even TVs produce ionic fields that attract charged particles. This also is what causes static cling. Because of this computers are more prone to collecting dirt. Add in intake fans and placement on the floor and you have the setup for the dust bunnies from hell.

You should open your computers about every 3-6 months and use canned air and blow them out. If you do that you'll have far fewer problems with the computer and I suspect even better health as you get rid of that allergen trap in your work area.

Someone gave me an older 3ghz P4 HTPC that stopped working.
The PSU is gone. clogged with pet hair.
I have to either replace the CPU heatsink or remove the fan & soak it in something then scrub it clean. It's a darn near solid dome of goock.
