Another computer set free...

Just downgraded a laptop to XP from Vista.

Kalobbis 10-24-2008 11:44 PM

it is Gods work you do.

I'm wiping one to put Ubuntu Hardy on it. May also put Ibex on it just to see how well the beta runs on it.

What was the reason for the rollback Bob. Too slow?

I had to replace the hard drive, and it was the only Vista machine left in the office.

It is a bit faster with XP though.

Why do you hate it.

I personally don't love or hate vista but I am amused by the constant bashing of it that people are doing. I find most of it baseless and incorrect.

loikrso 10-25-2008 05:51 AM

I don't understand and guess I just have a sweetly good setup by pure luck.
But I have had not nary a one problem with Vista at all.
I like it better than any other set up I've had.

to me it is the security flaws.

for usability it is super cool. there are some really nice features.

i would be happier if MS would improve OS function and leave out all the other add ins for media. if they wish, sell that as a separate function.

When i got XP, i just ignored all the MS media functions and use my own (Roxio, etc). The one exception would be using the Home Media and the wireless connections i have to connect to my xbox.

Security flaws? such as? And Xp doesn't have flaws? I've been cleaning up the latest round of bogus antivirus crap for the past two weeks. It pays the bills but I'm running ubuntu or suse more and more.

I'll take a mac or linux over windows of any flavor but I really don't see any issues with vista provided it is on decent hardware. Usability on vista mixed. Some things like the new start menu is great while other things like some of the network settings appear to been made harder to use. Most of it unchanged once you get past the aero glass desktop.

Darnisg 10-25-2008 06:17 AM

I'm flabbergasted your amused, but I'm feeling a little confused. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/confused.png

I have downloaded several things that I can't find. These weird little boxes pop up showing me what downloaded but when I go into my folders I can't find it anywhere... And a few other really quirky things I'm trying to figure out.

These windows don't feel user friendly, I completely understand why some people dislike them.

By default Vista puts things in to your user folder in the downloads folder. But vista has cool search feature. When you click on the start orb in the search box type in the name of your file. It will show up in the start menu. Want to start Microsoft Excel? Just type excel in the search box. Need to find a document but can't remember the name of it. Just type some of the text of that doc in the search box. Vista will find your doc.

and that is another issue: most OEM's put vista on everything (due to licensing). But not all computers can handle it. Unless you have a sturdy dual core, you are screwed.

ManHolDenPoker 10-25-2008 03:22 PM

I recently upgraded to a faster machine, which of course had Vista. I like it for the most part.

My only complaints:
1) Some of the programs I have depended on heavily won't run on it. I've been looking for replacements.
2) Quicken™ - which I've been using since it came out during the civil war - will run on Vista, but it won't work with Vista's printer function. Not just my printer, but virtually everybody's printers. And it's any version of Quicken!
To solve this, I have to print to an XPS document (Vista's version of a pdf file) and then print that with the IE browser, which I don't even use for browsing. Makes doing checks a real pain. Not Vista's fault, mind you, but it has been a real inconvenience.

I thought the drivers would be an issue, but they haven't.

rxnixoncom 10-25-2008 04:52 PM

wm,

Is yours the 64 bit version of Vista? I've only seen Quicken have problems with the 64 bit versions of Windows. Xp or Vista. That's a programing fault on Intuit not MS. They don't follow MS standards.

WFSdZuP3 10-25-2008 07:26 PM

I'm running Vista on my home pc. It works fine, I like some of the features a lot. But at work, under the assault of a variety of hardware users and software, it has proven to half-baked.

Yes, 64 bit.
And I agree that the fault lies with Intuit. I just brought it up because it's one of the few hassles I ran up against.
