Default "Cannot Connect to the FTP Server"
Now this is strange. Maybe someone may be able to help. Nline, you out there? I've never had any problems accessing FTP root folders while using FrontPage (2003). Suddenly I cannot and receive the error "Cannot connect to the FTP server on computer 'example.ftp'". The details of the error are limited stating my proxy settings could be wrong due to a firewall. Disabling the firewall does nothing. I am able to access any FTP I want outside of FrontPage, whether that be IE, DOS, or through a standard windows folder. I decided to repair FrontPage and reset all settings back to default, same goes for the firewall. Still no change. Any suggestions? I'm lost and at the end of my rope. Thanks!

Is your site hosted on a Linux/Unix server? If so, your hosting company may have killed the FrontPage Extensions since Microsoft announced that they will no longer support FrontPage Extensions for Linux/Unix. The only reason I know about this is my Hosting Company sent me an email saying they will keep the FrontPage extensions operating on their servers until =they= decide it is a performance/security risk (how's that for a firm time frame).

Have you tried accessing the FTP site manually? Say using a gui or the cli?

I think he said he can access the FTP via these other methods, he just can't do it through FrontPage. This is what led me to the extensions. FP has it's own server side authentication for FP FTP sites in the extensions. You blow away the extensions and FP can't authenticate your user/site, but you can FTP through the 'normal' users/permissions on the Linux box.

The quick and easy way to see if your Server Extensions are gone is if you had shared borders, navigation or forms on your site and now they don't work properly.

It's a theory. It could also be a port problem, FP may have been using a non-standard port number and it has been closed by your hosting company.

I would suggest you start shopping for a new web design/update tool, since FP is officially DEAD and is going to be left on the vine to rot by Microsoft.

I appreciate the prompt feedback. If it is a problem with the server extensions, it wouldn't be the first site I've worked on that's dropped them. It wouldn't suprise me either. I didn't get a fair warning if this is the case. Dropping the extensions seems to be the trend these days.

I've been using FrontPage since '98, so I haven't been very adamant on changing or learning new software although It looks like I'm not going to have much of a choice now.

I was afraid of this, thank you all for the help!

Never heard of it until now. At the office I use Dreamweaver at home Vim.

I've heard a lot of good things about dreamweaver... which one do you prefer?

Standard HTML, DHTML, CSS, various Javascript, databases, forms... that's the jist of it. Lately I have been messing around with some PHP, trying to expand my horizon, although FrontPage does not support it.

Aptana is looking promising & it's free.
However it isn't as intuitive as dreamweaver.
