Thank god Maria and Justine are second. I wouldn't be able to see them if they were first and I sure as hell don't want to miss it!

i saw only the first set of the Henin-Sharapova match - went to bed.. what turned it around in the second set? Did Sharapova play better? was Henin bothered by the impending darkness? if you saw the match, do tell me what you thought.. none of the columns talk about it.. thanks

I thought Sharapova was excellent. She was extremely aggressive and willing to change the direction of the ball and go for the lines. The first two Henin service games went to deuce and Sharapova wasn't able to break. I thought she was done for, but I think her determination kept her from getting discouraged. It was a very impressive set.

To add to this, I also thought Sharapova went outside of her comfort zone, trying different things. I believe she threw in a couple of serve & volley plays and looked to come into the net and be aggressive.

That's right! She hit high quality drop shots! She must have been practicing them because typically she'll hit drop shots off the forehand, and they're decent but not tremendous. She hit some really excellent backhand drop shots. She also volleyed conventionally. Normally she goes for the swinging ground stroke.

Scheepers' groundstrokes put me in mind of Mara Santangelo and Virginie Razzano. Flat and ugly.

Dementieva looks weird. Her taped calves make her look like a Hungarian Shotputter on a picnic or something.

Kirilenko I expected a much more competitive match. And to be awake for it. I woke up at 6 am, turned on the tv to see set point in set 1, decided to sleep 10 more minutes and just woke up.

I love when sharapova does the "cow-on-ice" role on clay!!! Sometimes it's like she just learned too walk yesterday, when she runs to answer a drop-shot!!! Allez!

So, NBC has embargoed Venus/Nadia. Time to bring out the stakes again.
